This was our second visit to Mereon. We had a good first experience and decided to come back—but unfortunately, this time didn’t quite work for us. The waitress let us know that they’ve updated the menu since our last visit. We started with mussels, which unfortunately had a strange taste and off-putting smell. To their credit, the staff promptly removed the dish and took it off the bill, which we appreciated. The duck was okay, but not particularly memorable. What really stood out—in a not-so-great way—was that several different dishes (sablefish, lamb, duck) all came with the same grilled cauliflower and steamed carrots. It made us question the chef’s creativity and overall vision. The sablefish was especially disappointing—bland and lacking any depth or finesse you’d expect from a French-inspired kitchen. On the plus side, the service was attentive (likely because the restaurant wasn’t busy), and the live music added a nice touch without being too distracting. We also received a complimentary dessert, which was a thoughtful gesture. Overall, we left with the impression that the head chef might have been away, and a team of young culinary professionals were doing their best to keep things running—perhaps by simplifying the original concept. It just didn’t feel like the same restaurant we enjoyed the first time.

It seems they were understaffed. We sat down for 6:00pm. Service was extremely slow. Our food arrived after 7:00pm. Very little interaction with our server. Food was sold as hearty and filling. My husband had to order a French Onion Soup after his meal. Portion sizes are on the small side. Even with the missteps we will be back.

Went to Meréon based on William Johnson's review in the Georgia Straight. It was fabulous. The wife had the sable fish, which was sublime, and I had gnocchi a la Parisienne which was top-notch. The dessert of some sort of salted caramel chocolate concoction was stupid good.
