About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Innovative
  • Great for creative cocktails
Moon Rabbit is a highly-regarded Vietnamese restaurant situated in the heart of Washington D.C., drawing inspiration from the virtuous rabbit depicted in the Buddhist Jataka tale. Led by acclaimed Chef Kevin Tien, the restaurant embodies an innovative approach to Vietnamese cuisine, showcasing a menu that is both unique and complex. Chef Tien's main objective is to pay tribute to his heritage as a first-generation Asian American, using Moon Rabbit as a platform for expressing his love for Vietnamese culture and food.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Kevin Tien

From the OpenTable editors: Come to the Moon Rabbit reboot for chef Kevin Tien’s singular approach to Vietnamese fine dining. In a modern, library-like space, his ambitious menu – think Mực Nhồi Thị (squid-stuffed boudin) and Cá Viên (barbecued monkfish with collard greens) – is both rooted in his Asian heritage and Louisiana upbringing while boundary-pushing, for a singular experience every visit.

@moonrabbitdc 🙏❤️👍 @chefkevintien and his ENTIRE staff for an exceptional meal, delivered with a combination of elegance, grace and familiarity along with perfectly executed plates from the little bites, fresh daikon summer rolls, my god the sweet potato tapioca gnocchi with Maryland crab , the melt in your mouth boudin with baby octo with that hit of salsa verde & the goji and date mostarda, giant prawns with lobster sabayon, the buns , perfect textures , explosive flavors in a beautiful dining space. Chef and his team coming out to wish he a happy birthday. And a perfect clear 70 degree night in DC @andreeschreiber and I felt like royalty and ate like lil Vikings. Truly an exceptional start to this birthday weekend. #eddiethefish

The desserts were the real standouts. The rest of the food was bland particularly when we were promised Vietnamese-Cajun fusion. It felt like too many ingredients blended together so the special qualities of any of them were indistinguishable.

This is our second time here and as my mum said, it was perfection from the beginning to the end. We loved everything we had and we ordered again the shrimp termidor as we love this dish so much. This time we ordered the tumeric mantou to go with it and it was delicious. To start we got the rice cake and garlic noodles which were very tasty and we also got the mochi beignet, spicy but just the right amount. For dessert we decided to order 2, pour waiter who was amazing recommended us the Durian and it this dessert was so fresh, lemony, you have to get try it! We also tried the tofu cheesecake, different but also very good. In the end it was a perfect meal, trying a lot of new and different things.

We had a wonderful dinner at Moon Rabbit. We had the summer rolls, wagyu stuffed leaves, fried quail, and black cod. Every bite was better than the next. Everything was so flavorful and delicious. The presentation was nice as well. The cocktails were fun and interesting! We also had the chocolate/mushroom dessert. Honestly, I wish we would have skipped dessert because it was so disappointing that it kind of lessened the rest of the meal. It was a beautiful presentation, but the flavors were just ok. Some of the flavors didn’t seem to complement each other. I guess the pastry chef is a James Bead Foundation nominee solely based on inventive ideas, not flavors. The servers were very attentive and did a great job. The atmosphere was nice. It was quite loud during prime time especially with an extremely loud/boisterous group next to us, but then, it was much more calm and quiet after they left.

Moon Rabbit was amazing! They were very flexible when I told them I would be a little late, and they made my dad’s birthday celebration one to remember! Great staff, amazing food, a wonderful overall experience! Props to Chef Kevin and his whole team.
