Extremely underwhelming experience for the price. We came to Niku Ou expecting a premium Japanese BBQ, but left feeling ripped off. The portion sizes were shockingly small, each person only got 4 tiny cut up pieces of meat, and somehow that turned into a $570 bill. The staff asked if we wanted the meat cut into 7 instead of 4, but never mentioned that doing so would DOUBLE the price. We assumed it was just a convenience, not a $291 upsell we didn’t agree to. Super misleading. Yes, the meat was soft and tasted fine, but honestly, not worth the cost. The lighting was terrible for photos, which completely kills the vibe for a place marketed as high-end. And to top it off, the staff didn’t even cook the food for us, unlike most premium Japanese BBQs. Would not recommend. There are so many better value and more transparent Japanese BBQ spots in Melbourne. Please save your money. My sister previously went and had the same experience as me she warned me but I still tried it, and hated it. I will never go back.

We are heavily restricted by Opentable in space to give your review a proper reply and welcome opening a dialogue on via email or calling us We pride ourselves on providing the highest quality dining experience and are disappointed to hear that we did not deliver this time. We understand since there were 7 adults on the table and with no other entrees, sides or other dishes were ordered other than our meat platter for 2-4 people, it was only prudent our team member offer to increase the portion size to the number of your group as by itself it wouldn’t be enough for your group to share. Celebrated my boyfriend’s birthday with friends. Had a fantastic time. Staff were amazing and very prompt. The BBQ selection was fantastic and the range of Kobe and Australian Wagyu we had was supple and delicious. Drinks were wonderful and the range or nibbles to have around the BBQ were great. Wonderful experience. Definitely back some day soon.

When we asked the waiter some questions during the meal, they seemed unsure about everything. Also, when the food was served, we were not given any bowls—how are we supposed to drink the soup?

Unfortunately the expectations were high but the food we had wasn't great. The wagyu sando was ok. But not for 150. The wagyu carpaccio was actually quite terrible. The cocktails were good but the food was overall extremely disappointing.
