In short the restaurant seemed to be critically understaffed, Expensive and a poor justification for the price of the meal. While the staff were courteous, I felt largely ignored by them in the wait between ordering and delivery which was an unbearable hour and a half. To add salt into the wounds, they charged me for bread I had asked for during the wait for my main course. Which given my preconceived presumption, I was expecting to be offered, if not given freely. As a result I'd rather go to the Kebab shop across the road than step forward in that restaurant again.

Having had a fabulous meal at river cottage Winchester, we were really looking forward to the Bristol restaurant. The building and staff were lovely but the menu and food underwhelming.

Lovely layout, staff were friendly and food was delicious. However a full priced main meal comes with NO sides! Sides are FAR TOO OVERPRICED! £3-4 for the tiniest portion of potato wedges, or a fork-full of beans, etc. Staff were slow and needed hurrying up frequently. I arranged a surprise cake and did a run through with staff, later to have desert menus dished out instead. Staff were friendly though. The River Cottage Canteen has some superb tasting food and great ambiance but the overpriced underwhelming sides were a huge disappoint. Double the portions or include some in the price of the mains and I'll come back.

River Cottage has become a regular eating venue for us, from an occasional lunch to a group dinner in the private dining room. The combination of ingredients is always interesting without being fussy and pretentious, and beautifully prepared. Today I was taking to lunch someone I had never met before but who happened to have done me an amazingly generous anonymous service. Our meal was the perfect accompaniment to a long and interesting conversation.

So much to choose from the menu so it was difficult to decide what to eat. Loved the kids menu as it had better quality of food rather than the usual fast food style items you get at other restaurants. Wish there was one in London.

We visited River Cottage Canteen for my parents 30th wedding anniversary. This was a long awaited visit - we had wanted to visit the restaurant when it first opened but had found it difficult to get a table! The food was wonderful - two members of our party were vegetarian and we were delighted with the range of vegetarian options on the menu which are not available elsewhere. We all enjoyed a mix of flavours and ingredients which were unusual but worked well together. The atmosphere in the restaurant was great - there was lots of room between tables which gave a feeling of space. The service was also of a high standard, with our waiter being very attentive and making recommendations on the menu. Overall we had a fantastic experience at River Cottage and would certainly go back again.

Very disappointed in our first and now our last visit to River Cottage Canteen. My boyfriend and I had been looking forward to eating at this restaurant and we left very underwhelmed! Food was somewhat dry and bland tasting. Our starter was ok but nothing special. For main course, I had the vegetable tartlet which was dry, cold and tasteless. My boyfriend had the plaice which again was very dry and lacking in wholesome flavour. Not exactly a cheap night out as the food is somewhat pricey for what we considered to be a below average experience. Would not recommend.

Great food, the quality of ingredients was clear given the it's great taste. Especially good for those who like to try seasonal foods locally sourced etc. Service was adequate.
