Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Randy Rucker

From the OpenTable editors: James Beard semifinalist Randy Rucker and his wife-partner Amanda Rucker opened this American gem in 2019 dedicated to spotlighting seasonal ingredients from the region. The intimate dining room feels like an extension of the open kitchen, where a four-course menu changes constantly, from sweet amalia oysters with buttermilk ponzu & trout roe to smoked steelhead trout with maple, celeriac & agretti. The results landed River Twice on the New York Times's list of the best Philadelphia restaurants.

One of the best meals I’ve had in Philly recently…and my food snob Brooklyn in laws agreed!! The sesame old fashioned was unique and perfect for a cold winter night. We sat at the chef’s counter and got to hear about the fresh ingredients while watching the chefs skillfully put together the beautiful plates. The four course prixe fixe is amazing on its own, but we decided to share some extras that were just phenomenal.

The food was very well prepared. I am a very small eater and appreciate quality over quantity. I found the portions miniscule. I didn't understand the rationale of having only two mixed cocktails. The server said that it had something to do with their liquor license. They did offer wine and beer and the pour of the wine was generous. The cocktail was extremely small. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. I really don't think I will be returning any time soon.

My husband and i went here on a Saturday night with another couple, and had an outstanding meal for a special occasion birthday. The entire experience really exceeded our expectations. We ordered all the add ons to the tasting menu (minus one) and it was the perfect amount of food for us. Menu has a lot of thoughtful Japanese influences. Order the bracing seaweed martini with kombu and seaweed brine and you won't regret it!

For goodness sake come here if you’re within 50 miles of Philly. An absolutely spectacular meal. The creativity and execution are better than Friday, Saturday, Sunday. I’m just amazed he hasn’t won a James Beard yet - shame on them.

We had a divine experience with the tasting menu —sat at the counter facing the chefs. Lots of fun chatter with them. The scallops were a highlight for me, my husband was nuts over the squid. We did augment with focaccia and oysters and were glad we did. They provided a serving of caviar on the side which was so nice and obviously with the ricotta and brea and also with the scallops just so good. The holidays were over: we said goodbye with this. What a gem.

Dishes were complex and some were amazing and others were complete flops. Left very hungry in a four course tasting menu.

First, the service at River Twice was wonderful. We sat at the bar and talked with the chefs and our waiter was top notch, freindly but not overbearing, and attentive to every detail and need. Our meal was wonder, especially the soldier toast with caviar and the foccacia and ricotta. Small, intimate space, not too loud, cozy and lovely ambience.

Set menu featuring 4 courses of delectable seafood. Very limited wine list--extremely limited bar. Great service.

We felt this meal and overall experience was disappointing. Our server was snarky, there was not much in the way of personality/interaction at the chef’s counter and 3 of the 4 dishes were very salty. In addition, we went for a birthday celebration and received two messages confirming that the restaurant staff was aware of this and nothing was done to make the person celebrating feel special. It seems it was too much effort to stick a candle on a plate. I will say that the presentation of the dishes was very nice, but delivered with no flair or enthusiasm. Needless to say, we will not be returning.
