Specialising in the long-standing tradition of Japanese charcoal cooking.

Head Chef Charles Lee has worked in a number of Michelin starred restaurants during his career before arriving at ROBATA. Possessing a strong command of Asian cuisines from across the globe, Chef Lee has devised a menu which shows the diversity of the country’s food, highlighting traditional cooking techniques and contemporary flavours, along with using the best of British produce.

ROBATA meaning ‘fireside’ specialises in robata grilled charcoal cooking, a Japanese tradition that was first introduced by ancient fishermen who took boxes of hot coals with them on their boats to warm their food at they gathered their day’s catch. While the cooking method has largely stayed the same, the menu is a modern interpretation of some of Japan’s most prized dishes as well as a number of ROBATA signatures sure to please Western pal

    I booked the 8 course tasting menu for my husbands birthday. He loves authentic Japanese food. The price was expensive but not ridiculous for central London. The restaurant is small and quite plain. There is little ambience, but it is clean and there is enough space between tables to ensure a little privacy of conversation. The food was fairly standard - nothing surprising. But it was well prepared and enjoyable. The one chef who can be seen at the end of the restaurant, working behind a glass screen, works hard and produces good quality Japanese fare. It was not a stunning experience but it was perfectly acceptable. The service was good and the staff friendly.

    To start, the servers were really attentive, kind and responsive with body language. Upon arrival I was seated straight away and given good service. Ambience is lacking slightly for the prices you pay however the food is absolutely outstanding. Best Japanese I’ve had in a while.

    I booked the £35 five-course brunch with prosecco through OpenTable. Upon arrival, the restaurant refused to honour the advertised deal, instead offering a three-course brunch with prosecco for £40. They offered an extra 30 minutes of prosecco as compensation which I refused to accept and I left without eating here. This bait-and-switch tactic is unacceptable, and I cannot recommend this restaurant.

    Amazing food, fresh and beautifully presented. Tasted delicious. Great service from attentive staff and the Prosecco was very nice too. Definitly returning.

    Always love eating here - so central, and the food is always really tasty. I usually, We ate very early 5:30, so the restaurant was very quiet so lacking its usual buzz. Think the staff were more focused on setting up for dinner than paying us attention so did have get their attention a few times (to order, To get drinks, to pay ….) However, this was unusual as we always have good service and great food. But please bring back the wagyu fillet on the bBq and hay.

    Had to wait 45 minutes for one diner's only course (simple dish of black cod) while three others had long finished all their orders. Miniature portions of skewers. Noise level unbearable. Understaffed.
