At first glance, you might think the name of Rouj Creole is misspelled. Besides “rouj” instead of “roux,” a quick scan of the new restaurant’s menu shows the word “gonbo” where you’d expect to find “gumbo.”

But owner Stephen Hightower isn’t a bad speller. He’s just bringing Baton Rouge a taste of Creole cuisine—complete with the authentic Haitian Creole spelling of traditional dishes.

New menu changes were not as good as previous visits. The oysters had so much mozzarella they tasted more like pizza than chargrilled oysters. The mashed potatoes were dry and gritty. The jalapeño bacon shrimp did not have a good taste at all. The sauce was bland and rice gummy. This is not the quality of food I have had at any of the City Group restaurants. The bar drinks were still on point.

Loved the soft instrumental music, it made it easy to hear each other while talking without having to shout. Food was EXCELLENT. Servers were attentive and kind. Great experience all around.

4th time to dine here. First time we weren’t super impressed. Dining room music was competing with the kitchen staff music. Both too loud. Food was just ok. Not bad, not great. Shrimp in the pasta were tough. Our server was outstanding. Wine had something floating in it. To top it off, they started sweeping around the table while we were still eating.

The Brie cheese appetizer is amazing— would prefer crostini to saltine crackers to accompany the dish. This is a must if you are dining with 2 or more people.

Wonderful and tasty food. Brunch is great and the mimosas are only $5!! Sammy, the bartender, was very attentive. High recommend giving it a try if you are a Sunday brunch person.

Rouj never disappoints. Service is invariably friendly and accommodating. Cocktails and wine list are both excellent. The food is some of the tastiest in BR. We had just one more perfect meal!
