Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: Regulars keep swinging back to Selden Standard for small plates and craft cocktails in a cool industrial space that USA Today named one of the best restaurants of 2024. Local and seasonal produce shows up in dishes like charred octopus from the woodfired oven and seasonal fresh pastas like sweet corn agnolotti. Catch the show at the chef’s counter or hang in the back patio lined with flower murals.

A charming space, punctuated by very kind and courteous hostesses and waitstaff (server Catharine was congenial and attentive). Food above average, but the portions were decidedly small. The Roasted Cauliflower was exceptional, as was the Tagliatelle. Drinks (3) were nearly 50% of the total bill, which seems like an unnecessary money-grab. There were several tables who used their cell phone flashlight to read the menu, as the font is very light and difficult to read. Though it may seem like a small inconvenience, it really isn't at all. The total dining experience should be quick, easy and convenient...shouldn't it?

I've never had anything other than a "very good, if not great" experience at Selden Standard. I typically bring folks here to open their mind to approachable, but unique, comfort food. The cocktail and beverage program are always on point, and often times experimental. (My counterparts were offered drinks that weren't even on the menu "yet.") Appropriately priced when you look at the effort and energy that goes into every dish and beverage, but definitely not overpriced. 3 people, 1 non-alcoholic, in and out for under 300 plus tip. Not bad for Detroit.
