Our refined Japanese restaurant, Shimogamosaryo, which was established in 1856, is set in a traditional Japanese house with a beautiful garden. If you want to experience the real Kaiseki, look no further. This restaurant is one of the top we have ever been. We booked a private room. Everything's from Food, to Service to Ambience was outstanding.

担当する係の方から、接客とはこういうものかと学ばされる。前回2年前、一元の客でフラッと入らせていただいたそんな客の好みを、今回は、言わずともさらっと提供して下さる。帰りの足の問題で、調理場を急がせたが、臨機応変に対応して下さり、感謝です。久しぶりにおいしいご馳走を、たらふく頂きました。係の方、調理場の皆さんありがとうございました。

Lovely Michelin star experience in Kyoto. We had our own private dining room in a traditional Japanese setting. We were able to try multiple traditional Kaiseki dishes, which were very good. And the service was excellent.

This historic and beautiful restaurant was listed as Michelin’s 1 star restaurant in 2021. Honestly speaking though, I was quite disappointed with my meal. All the dishes were nice, but not impressive enough to meet the price. The environment was very quiet, perhaps too quiet to enjoy the meal. I felt like I could hear a pin dropped and fall asleep any second while waiting for the next dish to arrive. My serving waitress was very shy and couldn’t really communicate in English. So I didn’t have the chance to understand and appreciate the complexity of every dish. The date on my menu was not updated as well which was disappointing as it showed that it wasn’t a personalised Kaiseki course in a supposedly fine-dining setting. Given this place is picked by the Michelin Kyoto guide, and the dear cost charged per person, I had a higher expectation on the overall quality and experience.
