While Slanted Door is opening this new location in Napa, it all began with an idea to open a Vietnamese crêpe stand or a noodle shop in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Charles Phan searched for a location but was told that there were already too many Vietnamese restaurants in the area. He moved the search to his own neighborhood: the Mission. He quickly found an available space on Valencia Street.

The Slanted Door was born in 1995 with the goal of elevating Vietnamese food to the next level—modern design, sustainable local ingredients, quality teas, and wine pairings. The Slanted Door was quickly recognized and became too small to accommodate the reservation requests. The growing restaurant moved to South of Market in 2002. It was there that the team integrated a craft cocktail program, which was one of the first restaurants in San Francisco to offer craft cocktail menus. The Slanted Door moved again to the San Francisco Ferry Building in 2004.

Food was good. Ambient noise almost triggered loud sound alert on Apple Watch. Every surface hard and reflecting. A real problem. Tables so close together server needs to lean in over your shoulder with cheek next to yours to speak with you. Waaaaay too close

I loved all the items we ordered except the shrimp dumplings. They were not cooked all the way through and you could still taste raw flour in the filling. Ambiance was amazing, service was excellent. The standout dish was the shaking beef. Their special duck and duck fried rice were also very good.

Reservation time honored. Haven't been to Slanted Door since the closure of the Ferry Building San Francisco location. Our experience exceeded my expectations. Looking forward to the reopening of the original location in San Francisco.

Oh my! A friend from another country remembered how much she loved the Slanted Door in SF. Rather than break it to her that it would not yet be open on her short visit to the US, it was easier to take her to the Slanted Door. Lunch was spectacular. The choices and the flavors are outstanding. My friend eats everything. My husband doesn’t eat port. I am a pescatarian who cant wait to take my vegetarian daughters for another lunch here. The wait staff was so kind, friendly and professional. Eating at the Slanted Door was a Real Treat. Highly recommend!

We had an excellent brunch/lunch today. We had the vegetarian spring rolls and they were excellent with a nice peanut sauce. We also ordered the Cellophane Noodles with crab and that was very delicious!! We ordered the Maitake side dish and enjoyed that too. The service was excellent. Everyone was helpful and friendly. It is a beautifully designed restaurant in a convenient location with lots of parking.
