South Block is a North-Carolina inspired BBQ hall and brewery on the edge of Mission, in Calgary. Upstairs you’ll find a large dining room, 20-seat bar, and a year-round indoor/outdoor beer garden. Downstairs hosts our stage, live music hall, and brewerey – where we brew our entire draft lineup from classic staples like our Pilsner, Lager, and IPAs, to our unique seasonal Peach Bourbon Ale and Mango Wheat Ale.

Behind the bar, we run a hand-crafted cocktail program and offer a whiskey list of over 200 varietals, including American, Canadian, Irish, Scottish, and Japanese whiskeys.

However, the biggest draw has to be our slow-smoked barbecue menu. Inspired by the flavours of North Carolina, our team arrives early every morning to smoke our famous brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and more for up to 14 hours.

I have been several times to South Block and have never been disappointed but this time was not the same. I understand that it was Father’s Day and so was very busy but our waitress forgot a third of our order and brought the rest out after we had finished eating, we noticed that she brought the incorrect orders to two other tables around us.

Overall, the experience was just okay. We booked a 4 p.m. reservation on Father’s Day to beat the dinner rush. When we arrived, we were seated at a long row of tables alongside two other parties—all at the same time—even though several separate four-person tables were empty. I had noted in the reservation that we didn’t want this setup, as we’d had a poor experience with it before. When I mentioned it to the host, she said she’d “see about it since it’s a busy night,” which made it feel like the upcoming reservations were being prioritized over ours. She did eventually move us, and we ended up leaving before the restaurant even filled up, so it wouldn’t have been an issue. The food was mixed—brisket was decent, but the herbed turkey was dry and lacked seasoning, which didn’t feel like great value. The macaroni in the mac and cheese was overcooked and soggy, but the watermelon and cornbread were both great. Service could’ve been better. When the server came by while my husband was in the washroom, I asked her to return in a minute so he could order another beer, but she didn’t come back until the bill arrived. We’ve had better food and service here on past Father’s Days, so this visit fell short in comparison.

Went to South Block for an early Fathers Day. The food, drinks, and ambiance were excellent as usual. However, all of the tables around us were served well before us, it took 45 minutes to get our drinks, which eventually came from a manager. Our food came out quickly but it took the server forever to take our food order. Perhaps someone was new, or they didnt have enough staff on, but the place was 3/4 empty when we arrived. We will be back, but honestly, letting people sit for 45 minutes for drinks will neither make the business or the server money.

For some reason, the television audio for the NHL Stanley Cup playoff game was cranked way up, making it difficult to have any conversation with our dinner mates. Made no sense at all for anyone in the restaurant. With everyone in the restaurant, raising their voice is to have any kind of conversation with others, The noise was so loud you couldn’t even hear the audio for the hockey game anyway. nonsensical and uncomfortable… We’re glad to finish our meal and depart… Unfortunate for what is otherwise an excellent restaurant !

Food is delicious, as always. Brisket was melt in mouth. Turkey was juicy, burnt ends, perfection. Carrots had great flavor but could have been cooked 2 extra minutes. Salted carmel cheesecake light and delicious. We will be back.

A few canned peaches and watermelon in a bowl is not a tray, the beet and goat cheese “tray” also sadly a small bowl with a goat cheese essence and at $14 was a tad steep for what is was. The brisket was good, flavor was good and cooked well. The turkey was also good but the old brown gravy was thick and gelatinous (think old kfc) and very sweet it took away from the smoke of the bbq. Overall we attended and it was an experience we can check off the list- but tbh once was plenty of times with other bbq options in Calgary. Wait staff were great 10/10, food was ok to meh 4.5/10.

Service was really slow. There was only a single server for the entire restaurant, and one new person that served drinks. It took over an hour to get our food after ordering.
