From the OpenTable editors: Eating at a MICHELIN-Starred restaurant can feel like a serious event, but that’s never the case at State Bird Provisions. The hardest – and best – part about eating here is sticking to your order, as a dim sum cart rolls by with plates like cheesy sauerkraut pancakes and other New American dishes with Asian accents. Thanks to an ever-changing menu from James Beard Award-winning chefs Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski, each visit is better than the last.

Join us in welcoming Tyler Malek, founder & flavor wizard of Salt & Straw to celebrate the release of his upcoming cookbook: America's Most Iconic Ice Creams. Our team will be collaborating on one-night-only dishes featuring Salt & Straw flavors with a State Bird twist. Co-written with James Beard Award-winning food writer JJ Goode, the new cookbook shares Salt & Straw’s version of the country’s most famous flavors for the first time, applying Tyler’s deep affection for quality ingredients and his mastery of ice cream science to create mind blowing riffs on those flavors that still stay true to their archetypes. Alongside the recipes, Tyler also shares buying tips, techniques and important ingredient context that home cooks at all levels can learn from to make more interesting and delicious ice cream. Special dishes will be served à la carte alongside our regular nightly menu.

My first time finally dining here and, sadly, I was disappointed by the service and timing. We booked counter seats. The waiter stopped by and explained the menu and how the "dim sum" food is passed. Food started coming to us before we had a chance to order wine. We finally were able to order our wine but before it arrived, "dim sum" offering after offering came to us in such rapid pace that we had to turn most of it away in order to try to pace ourselves and enjoy the items we had ordered or already selected off the dim sum. Later, when we caught up with the service, no more dim sum arrived. It felt like we were being rushed through our meal for the next seating. Most of the dishes were excellent (Halibut crudo, an oyster, smoked trout spread on home made chips), but there were a few misses. The port katsu we ordered was delivered very late and was dry. I will give State Bird another try but my multiple experiences as the sister restaurants, Progress and Anchovy Bar, leave me preferring them over State Bird.

When we sat down at our table at State Bird, we had no idea of what we were about to experience. The stream of delicious, high quality items brought by our table one at a time, was a dim sum like technique of being fed except you're only presented with one item rather than a dizzying cart full of items.. Additionally we had asked for three menu items from our our friendly server and drinks. We wound up cancelling the larger item we had asked for so we could imbibe in the the dim sum experience. When we go back, we may forego the menu completely and just go with the flow of the items presented tableside. Loved it- you gotta go!

What an experience this is! The food items are incredibly creative and delicious. They use ingredients and combinations of ingredients that I would never have thought I'd like. But there wasn't one dish that I didn't like. Favorites for me were duck liver mousse with honey biscuits, steamed egg tofu, squash agnolotti, and red trout. But everything was wonderful! The "dim sum" style of service was fun and allowed us to see the offerings rather than just read a description, which really enticed us to try things we might not have. I would definitely return again and again as they change their offerings regularly. This is a place worth experiencing!

State Bird Provisions offers a unique fusion of Japanese, Southeast Asian, and Californian flavors. The restaurant serves small plates dim-sum style, allowing you to sample a variety of dishes. The wedge salad and sourdough with burrata are must-try options. Additionally, you can order from the menu, which features standout options like the local halibut crudo—the best crudo dish I've ever had. Despite its Michelin star, the prices are reasonable. Each dim sum plate is small and priced accordingly, giving you control over how much you eat, unlike a prix fixe menu. This restaurant is one of the Bay Area's treasures—a must-visit spot.

Fantastic atmosphere! Waitress and entire staff was excellent at navigating their unique dining style. Impeccable dim sum a la carte throughout the meal. Will definitely return if I'm ever in the San Fransisco area again!
