Sunset Monalisa came highly recommended for its breathtaking views and elevated dining experience, so I was excited to visit during my trip to Cabo. Unfortunately, my experience left much to be desired.
Upon arrival, the host informed me that the restaurant was reservations-only and that premium seating required an additional fee. However, I had already secured a reservation easily through OpenTable without any mention of these extra costs. This initial exchange set a sour tone, especially when the host claimed she didn’t know when my table would be ready. For a restaurant of this caliber, I found this to be unprofessional and disappointing, almost like an attempt to upsell customers unnecessarily.
To their credit, the manager stepped in after realizing I wasn’t happy and accommodated us properly. While I appreciated this effort, it’s unfortunate that it took the implication of a review to receive adequate service.
Now, onto the food. I ordered the Japanese wagyu and the raw oysters, both of which sounded promising but failed to deliver. The wagyu was tender, but the flavor didn’t stand out, and the oysters were just average. For the high price point, I expected to be wowed, but the dishes fell flat. The view may be stunning, but when I’m paying such a premium, I expect the food to match the scenery.
The saving grace of the evening was our server, who was attentive, personable, and genuinely committed to making our experience enjoyable. He went above and beyond, which made the night feel slightly less disappointing.
Ultimately, Sunset Monalisa feels like a restaurant that relies heavily on its location to justify exorbitant prices. While the views are undeniably gorgeous, there are other restaurants in Cabo offering similar scenery without the steep cost and service hiccups. For me, this was a one-and-done experience. If you go, do so for the sunset, not the dining.
