About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Great for craft beers
  • Neighbourhood gem
---The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, now run by the fourth generation, Pete Berghoff. Today's Berghoff menus have evolved to add newer, lighter, and more contemporary dishes, but it's still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer. In December 2018, the Berghoff family opened Adams Street Brewery, aptly named after the street they have called home for over a century, to nod to their brewing roots and commemorate the restaurant's 120th anniversary.

This place will never be accused of being fine dining but it is a quirky part of Chicago's history. Good food and OK service. A very interesting selection of locally brewed beers. All hard surfaces so it is noisy.

It's The Berghoff! Besides good food and service, ending the meal with Black Forest and German Chocalate cakes - what's not to be happy with?

We’ve been eating at this standby for 40 years. It has survived better neighborhood German Restaurants but it’s part of Chicago’s dining history. Since it’s still going strong they’re doing something right. Great for pre theater dining.

Our server was delightful, friendly and made us feel welcome. The food was good and hearty but would not consider a must go for a foodie. Impressive menu that would please all tastes from traditional German to more American fare. The wine list was basic and mostly grocery store wines. However the history, ambiance and warm service all more than made up for the average food and wine list.

We had a reservation and walked in and our first impression of the ambience was nice because we love old buildings (very clean). We were not impressed with the treatment of the hostess, she looked at us and then stared at us for a few minutes even though we said hello. Then a male waiter stopped by looked us up and down and loudly whispered “give them to Ester, I don’t want them.” (Tall guy, hair pulled back and wore glasses, kept hugging the hostess every time he stopped to talk to her. Finally, she asked if we had a reservation and we said yes, she sat us and we were brought water right away. Our server was Ester, she was one of the most amazing people we encountered on our trip to Chicago. She was friendly and spoke to us like we were old friends, she answered all of our questions and gave recommendations. The food was beyond amazing and we cannot wait to come back to Chicago to enjoy it again. I’m not sure if we would have had as great of a time if we would have had any other server that night. We did have a man stop by to fill our waters and he was extremely night and funny! Overall this place gets five stars from my family. I highly recommend trying it! Thank you again to Ester for showing kindness and being amazing!

Exciting dishes and excellent presentation. We expected an old-style German restaurant. While they have a few traditional German dishes, most of the menu has a wide variety of non-traditional dishes.

I had the Sauerbraten, which is "marinated roasted beef sirloin, sweet and sour gravy, asparagus, green beans, mashed potatoes" and it was absolutely incredible! and for $25.95, an incredible deal! We arrived at 5pm and it was wonderfully quiet! When more people arrived, and it became full, it was still relatively quiet! I highly recommend family owned, wonderful Berghoff's!
