---The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, now run by the fourth generation, Pete Berghoff. Today's Berghoff menus have evolved to add newer, lighter, and more contemporary dishes, but it's still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer. In December 2018, the Berghoff family opened Adams Street Brewery, aptly named after the street they have called home for over a century, to nod to their brewing roots and commemorate the restaurant's 120th anniversary.

There’s no place like the Berghoff. And no place like the Berghoff at Christmas. It’s quintessential Chicago. But service was off on our recent visit, even accounting for the busy holiday season. It started with a 30 minute wait just for a server to arrive, necessitating a contact with restaurant staff to remedy. Service was fine after that, but it made us question management's effectiveness (acknowledging the challenges of the hospitality industry). To its credit, a round of drink was comped. Food was tasty all around. The room, exquisite everyday, was pure sparkle with the holiday décor. We will return, but during this season be prepared to be patient. Servers are essential workers and their efforts are greatly appreciated.

The restaurant is so bright and so loud! Turn down the lights a bit and people will lower their voices! It’s not particularly pretty and the food is okay.

The Berghoff is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago and I always fit it in during a visit there. It's a classic and you just can't go wrong.

Nice atmosphere. Good service. Only issue was that the coffee could have been warmer.

Great experience, great staff! Was loud with all the holiday groups, so that might be unusual. There was a line waiting for the doors to open, so we were glad to have reservations. Definitely try the onion/apple soup- it was amazing!

We had a wonderful experience at The Berghoff. We were seated immediately even though we were early for our reservation. Our waiter came promptly and answered all questions we had about the food and drinks. Our lunches came quickly. Everything was delicious. Payment at the table was fast, efficient, and convenient. It was a pleasure to dine at The Berghoff, and we will definitely return.

Berghoff brews fantastic beers on site. Try them! I had a sake style draught beer that was so original and drinkable. The food is very good as well. Service is great. Watch out though. They may mark your OpenTable reservation as a no show.

The Berghoff is a beautiful restaurant, but for being such a legendary and long-fabled dining location, the food was very very sub-par. The staff seemed to snicker at us for making a reservation at all, as if to imply, "why would we bother." Perhaps we arrived a little late to get the freshest picks from the kitchen. We ordered the potato pancake appetizer and two Wiener Schnitzel dinners, thinking that would be a classic choice. The schnitzel was low on flavor, the spätzle was cold, and the creamed spinach appeared to have formed a dried skin on top from sitting under a warming lamp for a half-hour or more too long. The desserts were made sloppily with uninspired ingredients. Overall, we would not bother dining here again when there are many other better restaurants... but as a Chicago landmark, I suppose it was worth trying once.
