In 1960, R. J. “Bob” Lee opened The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo Texas on Route 66, the “Mother Road”. It’s distinctive architecture soon became recognized across the Mother Road as a good stopping place for great steaks grilled over an open flame. The Big Texan is famous for the FREE 72oz steak challenge, which includes eating a salad, baked potato, shrimp cocktail and 72 ounces of beef! Stop in and have a one of a kind experience with large, juicy steaks, cowboys and cowgirls, and take a dive into the Old Wild West!

Don’t waste time making a reservation, they ignore it and put you in line with all the walk-ins. Prepare to wait 15 minutes after seated for a waiter.

The food was great, as well as the service. This is a very festive place with a gift shop, bar, outside seating and a bakery.

We arrived 45 minutes early to our reservations, but they seated us right away. The mushrooms and the oysters made great appetizers. For dinner we ordered the Tomahawk steak and it was great. Service was excellent as well. The only drawback to our visit: they serve Pepsi instead of Coca-Cola.
