Serving fresh, bold and innovative food that reflects the history of New Bedford and celebrates the New Bedford fishermen, their catch and their culture.

Our menu focuses on local fishermen’s catch of the day, old school seafood favorites and a sprinkling of modern seafood interpretations. Menu ranges from raw bar, to warm and cold lobster rolls, baked cod, bacon wrapped scallops, bouillabaisse and grilled NY Strip.

Large bar and spectacular views of the artful New Bedford Fishing Fleet. Large covered and heated deck overlooking the fishing boats and harbor. Centrally located beside the Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Ferries. Large parking lot.

And, of course, the hospitality is second to none. Service is what built the business.

The black Whale always delivers! We had the Chilean Sea Bass which is absolutely wonderful. Cooked to perfection. We visit the Black Whale about once a month and are never disappointed. Good to see Doug this time. He makes you feel wonderful and such an added plus to our visit.

We opted to sit at the bar and glad we did. The service was phenomenal. Connor was fantastic. He was one of the best service/bartenders we ever had. My steak was overcooked but that was taken care of with the manager who came over to apologize, which I thought was very nice. Good food, drinks and great service! what more could you ask for?

Went for an early dinner at 4:30, were seated right away. Fantastic service right away and throughout the entire dinner. I had stuffed sole, my husband had poke bowl, our friends had pan seared scallops and blackened swordfish. It was all super delicious. Our friend who had the blackened swordfish said it was in the top 5 of best dinners he’s ever had, blackened to perfection, great sauce, polenta was great accompaniment with another complimetray sauce and the peppers tied it all together. Had to share as he was effusive about how great the meal was.

Surf and Turf sushi (with lobster & waygu beef) was unexpected and outstanding! Boom Boom Shrimp very lightly battered very tasty. Lobster roll was fabulous, my blackened swordfish was perfectly cooked and flavorful, my son's fried scallops (he shared!) were so sweet and delicious. Our drinks were fabulous, too. I had lemonade with lavender and mint...the kids had two of whatever they drank. 2 apps, 3 dinners, 6 drinks the tab was $200! WOW worth much more. Oh crab with crackers, too. Service so attentive, helpful and knowledgeable. A great dining experience.

Arrived for our inside 6:15 pm reservation at 6:10pm. At 6:30 I asked how much longer since everyone else that had come in already had been seated. I was told not to much longer. At 6:40 a diffrent person came up to us and told us if we’d take a booth she’d seat us now in the outside (tented) seating section. My elderly, disabled parents were now anxious and annoyed. I asked how long to sit inside where our reservation was made for and was told about another 20 minutes. At that point we crammed into the booth. The waitress was very good and this was no reflection on her. She said that she was sorry for the wait and that the manager was going to comp an appetizer. Of course when the bill came, nope, no comp. We dropped $500 for four people so another 20 bucks on appetizer was going to break the bank, Oh well. At least the food was good.

The food is always amazing but it is always super loud in there, which makes it tough to have conversations when 1 person in your party has hearing impairment. Service is always fantastic too!
