About this restaurant

  • Great for scenic views
  • Dog-friendly
  • Good for groups
Perched within the historic Compton Abbas Airfield, Lore of the Sky is a bold new smokehouse restaurant from Guy Ritchie’s team.

Set in the heart of Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this is where aviation heritage meets Texas-style barbecue. Whether you’re watching vintage Spitfires take flight or soaking in the panoramic views over Shaftesbury, Lore of the Sky offers an unforgettable dining experience and less than an hour from the Jurassic Coast.

Our menu is a celebration of deep flavour and smokehouse tradition. Crafted by Head Chef Alex Brown, each dish—from oak-smoked pork belly to loaded nachos and rich jackfruit burgers—is smoked on-site using the legendary J&R Oyler Smoker, the first of its kind in the UK.

With every bite, you’ll taste our commitment to quality, locally sourced ingredients, and fire-powered finesse.

Location at the Airfield is great, environment is spacious and tables are not too close together- although as a table of 4 our table was a bit snug for 4 adults. The service was friendly and efficient and toilets were clean and well appointed. The main downside was the food. We made a 2.5hr drive on the promise of a proper texan bbq but what we got was very disappointing. We ordered the beef, pork and jacket potato. Everything was extremely dry. Even the bbq beans. No butter on the potato and beef was very chewy. The chips were the only dish that tasted good. Overall, it was a fun day out with a classic car display and planes outside (and good weather) but I wouldn’t recommend it as a place to eat and definitely not for bbq.

Food was dry and not very tasty. There was no service at all, felt like we were an inconvenience. Had we have received service we would have ordered drinks, possibly looked at a dessert.

The restaurant itself was very nice, amazing view of the airfield, very unique and for that reason it is worth a visit and I will no doubt be back. The food itself was mediocre, my husband had a veggie breakfast which looked good, my egg roll was fine, but the bun wasn't great, sort of burger van quality, kids had pancakes that looked like shop bought American pancakes and croissants, again, poor quality. coffee wasn't great and tea was served in a mug with the (pretty basic) tea bag floating in it. Service was fine, but slow, but they were really busy so that's understandable. We would try it again for lunch, but not for breakfast

The locations is great, the planes are fantastic and the food is on point. It's just let down by the fact that it is too busy, which really affects the ambience. We were also unfortunate during our visit that the WiFi went down which resulted in the payment methods being inoperable which again affected the ambience as it led to a lot of people queueing in the seating area. As we were early for our booking we sat outside to enjoy the views, considering how many people are there it seems odd that there isn't more seating. I feel it would benefit from much more seating and it's not as if they don't have enough space.

Airfield location, fantastic. Food, decidedly average and overpriced. £54 for 2 average pulled pork rolls with chips and glasses of coke (I think an optional, but not mentioned, tip was added to the bill - I hate when establishments do this and for that reason, will never return to eat there again). The serving staff were very friendly, but the chap that seated us was clearly rushed off his feet and consequently not able to offer the personal touch the such a place probably should.

The breakfast was served without the eggs. I had to ask for them. Then only 3 were delivered. The waitress seemed surprised I wanted all of the eggs. We were sat on a table with no cutlery, I had to ask for some. The pancakes were dry and the amount of maple syrup on them was minimal. My wife had to ask for more. When I asked why was it so difficult to get eggs with the breakfast, I was told it was due to a new chef and new equipment. That was £57 badly spent.

Rather warm so would benefit from Air conditioning or ceiling fans. Some waiting staff weren’t too knowledgeable but others were faultless. Overall wonderful & highly recommend. Not my first visit & won’t be the last either!

We booked a table having read a newspaper article about their new “Lore of the Sky” restaurant and its reference to how they cook their meat on a Texan Smoked BBQ. Steak was mentioned twice in the article. It was our wedding anniversary and also we wanted to treat our granddaughter to a nice legal as she was heading off the live and work in New Zealand next week. She also loves steaks! The article majored on this Lore of the Sky as being a new restaurant which it is not. This cafe has been there for years. All they have is a new menu! On arrival it transpired that steaks were not on the menu, which was what we had all been looking forward to. Somewhat disappointed we ordered the nachos (2 with beef and 1 with sloped chicken). They were supposed to come with red salsa, guacamole and cheese sauces. They arrived without the guacamole which we had to ask for. The sauces were very meagre and therefore we all left most of the nachos as they were not particularly appetising without sauce. I explained the situation to the restaurant manager and he apologised but said that steaks were not on offer and when he asked about the article I said I would forward it to him as he wished to share the misleading article with head office. In conclusion, we were underwhelmed by this experience; we were very disappointed not to have been able to order the steaks we were so much looking forward to. The nachos meal was poor and to be avoided unless you like crisps on their own.

Really disappointing. Service and atmosphere was at best average. Food though was very poor. The 8hr slow cooked belly of poor was either not cooked for 8hrs or was a poor piece of meat to start with. Belly pork cooked long and slow should have all the fat rendered out and the meat should fall apart. This looked more like it was roasted in an oven for an hour then slapped on a chargrill to finish. I ordered an apple & pear juice. I hadn’t noticed on the menu that it was a small child’s carton drink. The waitress did give me a glass after I asked for one, but when I asked for scissors to open it, I was told rather abruptly to use the straw like everyone else. When we paid we tried to give feedback there and then FOH was more interested in his phone and the young lad taking our card payment didn’t respond when we told him we felt the meal wasn’t great, and he clearly had heard us. We wouldn’t return or recommend.
