An award winning 16th century Devonshire pub with thirteen bedrooms, situated in the historic and picturesque Dartmoor village of Lydford.

With low ceilings, wonky walls, open fires and character in abundance. We are situated in the Dartmoor National Park just off the A30 between the market towns of Okehampton and Tavistock (both 10 minutes away) in the quiet, charming village of Lydford, just 200m from the entrance to the majestic National Trust site of Lydford Gorge. We are surrounded by invigorating walks, horse trails and national cycle routes, with cosy corners and roaring fires in the winter months and large beautiful gardens to enjoy in the summer, there’s something for everyone year round.

The pub has a main bar, snug, restaurant, heated and lit stretch tent, thirteen bedrooms and large beautiful gardens. Our menu features pub classics alongside British favourites, always seeking to make the very best of the fantastic produce on our doorstep.

Incredible meal in a lovely pub. This really is one of the best “pub dining” experiences you could ask for. A lovely well-rounded menu and exemplary cooking made for a wonderful evening meal. We chose venison pie, hand made in house, which my partner described as one of the best pies he has ever had, anywhere, and I chose venison with pomme dauphinois…simply gorgeous! Rounded off with a selection of first rate local cheeses. Great beers on tap and a modest selection of well-priced wines. Also highly recommended is the wild garlic margarita- fantastic! The pub itself is authentic and lovely with both pub dining tables and restaurant tables in a great setting. In the early evening it buzzes with locals- deservedly a popular place. Well worth a visit if you’re near Dartmoor and also a great place for an overnight stay with a first rate local breakfast in the morning. Could not recommend more highly!

We go to the castle inn quite a lot it is our pub of choice as we live close by.always love the place as so attractive and especially in nice weather like today when we can sit outside.all four adults had double roast which while very tasty was bordering on lukewarm which we all agreed was disappointing.our 3 year old grandson had cheeseburger and chips which was piping hot.we did tell our waitress that the lunch was abit on the cold side.

We came to the Castle for a Saturday lunch for two and ate in the main bar. This is a warm, cosy, proper pub, with friendly atmosphere and service. Locals drinking at the bar are happy to engage in conversation. The food was outstanding and we loved that it was locally sourced, as all food should be. Including offering plenty of choices for one of us, who has to eat dairy free. This is very unusual! The beer was good too.

We had a wonderful breakfast before exploring the area. The staff were very accommodating and showed us around the history of the building, an incredible place, thank you.

A lovely homely pub with a friendly atmosphere. My nut roast was excellent but my partner's roast beef was very fatty and we had to request a replacement. I noticed that the couple on the table next to us also returned some food as undercooked. I felt that the staff weren't very attentive and constantly had to get up and request some service. Will probably try again though just to see if it was a one-off bad day.

One of my favourite places to eat, probably have a meal here every couple of weeks. I have found over the last couple of months that the standard of food hasn't been as good, not sure if there has been a change of chef or management ? This visit I had the sausage and mash, the gravy was too sweet and rich for me, my partner had the steak he has had this previously and it has been amazing this time unfortunately not as good, even the plating of it wasn't great, perhaps some watercress to add a bit of colour. Wish the menu would change a little more often or a larger selection of specials (probably because we eat here regularly) We will still be regular diners despite the few issues we have had.

Fantastic visit, great food & service (as ever), lovely setting and nice old character pub. Venison was outstanding. Love that they state on menu where they source all their produce from, all local. Would highly recommend. Have been before, will definitely go again!
