The Catbird Seat is an intimate, chef-driven restaurant and culinary incubator that provides chefs a creative outlet in an interactive and open kitchen setting. With just 20 seats arranged around a U-shaped counter, guests are offered a front-row view of the chefs at work, crafting a 10-12 course tasting menu that evolves with the seasons.

Currently led by Chefs Tiffani Ortiz and Andy Doubrava, the menu features a dynamic selection of dishes that emphasize sustainability and innovation. Drawing on ingredients preserved from past seasons, foraged finds, and items from their larder, Ortiz and Doubrava showcase their commitment to creativity, resourcefulness, and a modern approach to sustainable cooking.

Since its opening, The Catbird Seat has received numerous accolades, including recognition as one of GQ Magazine’s Best New Restaurants, Bon Appetit’s Best New Restaurants, Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Wine Restaurants, and Opinionated About Dining’s Top 100 North American Restaurants.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tiffani Ortiz & Andy Doubrava

From the OpenTable editors: When it opened 2011, Strategic Hospitality’s flagship tasting restaurant kicked off a new era of fine dining in Nashville. In addition to racking up accolades from GQ and Bon Appétit, Catbird Seat has been an incubator for some of the city’s top chefs. Today, Tiffani Ortiz and Andy Doubrava command the open, counter-style kitchen, turning out innovative New American tasting menus that can stretch to 18 courses of dishes like a walnut cookie filled with chicken liver mousse and berry preserves.

We live in Nashville and have Catbird Seat as our very special occasion go-to. We have managed to see each of the chefs who have come through over the years. Food is always creative and executed right before your eyes. Although they offer to accommodate special dietary needs it would be best to let them know as far ahead as possible. Even so you get a last chance when you arrive to be seated. The ambiance is lively with fairly loud modern music. You will be seated side by side and elbow to elbow with other groups, so do not expect a quiet candle lit dinner gazing into each other’s eyes. Each of the ten or so small courses is a surprise that will be explained to you as it arrives including suggestions on how to eat it. I found it hard to understand the directions over the background music, but you may have younger ears than mine. You can order drinks off a menu, but I recommend the drink pairings, either alcoholic or nonalcoholic, that accompany one or two of ten or so courses each. You get a souvenir menu at the end showing everything you ate and drank. The chefs and their assistants have all been very open to chat as they bring and retire dishes. They are attentive to your reactions to their creations. Expect to spend about $500 for a couple for food and paired drinks. Bill includes a 20% service charge so no need to tip extra. The restaurant will soon be moving to a new venue closer to downtown along with partner Patterson House. We will keep coming back every year or two!

This was our second time dining at The Catbird Seat, and our first since Chefs Tiffani Ortiz & Andy Doubrava took over. It was a 5-star experience all around! Service was excellent. The food was just out of this world - so creative, fun, and delicious. Both the wine pairings and non-alcohol pairings were on point. The pastry dishes were also phenomenal. From beginning to end, the entire dining experience was an absolute joy.

Eclectic tasting menu lacked substance. Flavors were very good left hungry.

People there are great! Food was good, wine parings were mediocre at best. Really loud in there, couldn’t hear half the things being explained. It’s definitely an experience. I’ll be back at some point. $800 meal for two? No, but more like $400-$500 would be worth that experience.

Every bite was delicious! The staff was so friendly and welcoming and the food was incredible. They locally sourced many of their ingredients and explain every bite which makes the experience that much more enjoyable. One of the best meals we have had!
