Michelin & James Beard-recognized Chef Ricardo Zarate has opened The Hummingbird Ceviche House featuring the Nikkei (Japanese-Peruvian) cuisine he’s best known for. In a charming space with a turquoise-quartz bar, The Hummingbird serves an irresistible bill of fare focused on fresh seafood prepared using traditional Nikkei techniques elevated by California influences. The Los Angeles Times' Laurie Ochoa wrote: "...the service is caring and the food, including an aji amarillo hummus flatbread and sesame-leaf-wrapped shrimp dumplings with tiger's milk aioli, is inventive and delicious. And...the Hummingbird is affordable." Diners delight in Nikkei hand rolls, delectable ceviches, small bites, hot dishes, desserts and house-made Chicha-Morada drinks. The Hummingbird was named one of The Infatuation LA's "Best Restaurants of 2024." NEW: Talented musicians perform live jazz on Tuesdays!

It’s been a long time since I’ve been somewhere where EVERYTHING is excellent but the hummingbird ceviche house delivered. The hand rolls, especially the tuna and the picarones were two highlights as was the u fussy friendly service. Get there early to find parking.

This was our 2nd time dining at Hummingbird and it was even more delicious. Everyone from the chef to the host and all the servers are so kind and helpful. It really feels like their team is a family:) We sat at a cozy table this time (although highly recommend the bar if you can get a spot to watch the chef and his team work.) All the fish is incredibly fresh and all the flavors of the sauces really complement without overpowering. Favorites are the tuna handrolls, yellow tail tostada & the shrimp dumplings which are on the spicy side but so yummy! The word is out, so definitely make a reservation.

This was my first time at the Hummingbird Ceviche House and let me tell you. I will be back. :) The Hand-rolls and Yellowtail Tostada were phenomenal, everything is fresh. Also their purple corn iced tea is amazing, the small diced of apple and pineapple on the top of the drink just make it more amazing. I came here for a girls night and our server Dayana was the sweetest! Keep Her ! lol. She made sure we understood the menu, had great recommendations and even sprinkled some compliments onto my girls and I which made us feel beautiful. Thanks Again Hummingbird it was a great time.

Ricardo Zarate is widely considered the best Peruvian chef north of Lima, so it's no surprise that his new Nikkei ceviche house is amazing. What is surprising, however, is the reasonable price points -- especially compared to his previous joints like Rosaline -- for first-rate sourcing, execution and originality. This reminds of his early days with Mo-Chica, a throwback energy with a modern flavor combos. As for the dishes, my fave dishes were the miso cod tostada, steak on hummus / flatbread, shrimp dumpling ceviche wrapped in sesame leaf (like shiso), crispy ceviche and the salmon tiradito. Those are top tier to me, second tier maybe spicy tuna handroll, seafood risotto and crab papa relleno. Hope that helps.

Food was GREAT! We arrived early and were the 1st customers. They seemed a bit caught off guard, even though we had a reservation. The only issue was the service. Our server was very warm and welcoming. She clearly needed more training as she seemed unclear of the menu and basic service steps. This only got worse as the restaurant began to fill. Other customers were visibly and vocally upset. My wife and I are both in the restaurant business and chose patience over frustration. At the end of our meal, another individual appeared (seemingly out of nowhere) to explain how we ordered “incorrectly”; we chose the tasting menu for $60. Both of us had no issue paying the increased price. However, this individual should have been present to help the completely overwhelmed server during service. That’s the only issue of our experience. The lack of teamwork and proper training was the overwhelming issue. I sincerely hope they can pull it together because they do have something special there.

I feel like the food was pretty good but overall nothing incredible. The salmon ceviche was just four little smoke salmon rolls with some sauce and caviar, the steak was incredibly chewy and they didn’t have steak knives. They serve water in plastic cups for some reason, and the service was mid. The waitress did tell us a lot of info about the dishes which was good but then they really didn’t come back to refill water, or give us our check. It was kind of lax.
