The Pig and Butcher opened its doors in 2012 and has become a bit of an Islington institution. A laid back country style pub with a stunning private dining room and honest cooking showcasing the best farms in the UK.

In the bar we serve craft beers, wine from family-owned vineyards only, aperitif cocktails and a selection of local hand pulled ales.

We have recently completed our beautiful private dining room. With a wood burning stove and Aga oven, it’s our own farmhouse kitchen in the heart of Islington. There is no charge for the room however there is a minimum spend. It is available for either lunch or dinner and will seat 16-24 guests comfortably. For availability and minimum spend details drop us an email at crackling@thepigandbutcher.co.uk. We offer our feasting menu – all dishes are served on vintage platters ‘farmhouse style’ for the table to share. It is quite meaty, but don’t despair, Vegetarian and Pescatarian guests will be catered for by the daily changing a la carte menu.

Tasty food, good prices, nice atmosphere. We went for a Sunday roast with my family and sat at the upper floor which was more quiet. The service was great and the food and wine was very nice.

Took the wife to this place as reviews recommend the steak and boy was she not disappointed. We started with just bread and butter , but a couple of large slices of sourdough with salty butter and beef dripping came ...she loved it. Then for main I ordered the hake and she had the Rump in peppercorn sauce ..the hake was good but unsure if it was worth the £26 price tag , however the steak at a whopping £32 was according to my wife the best steak she has ever tasted ...so worth it .. no time or room for pudding so left it there ...wife was happy meaning I was too !!

Food and ambiance were good, however we made a 9pm booking through open table, arrived a few minutes after our booking only to be told the kitchen was actually closed. They then came back and said they could accommodate us only if we ordered immediately, and were then somewhat rushed through dinner, leaving after about 50 minutes in the restaurant. To make guests put a card down, accept a 9pm reservation and then initially turn guests away is pretty shocking.

I’ve dined here before - all good for Sunday Roast, but I should remember to go earlier in the day as the potatoes were hard, (maybe re heated), and my chicken was slightly dry. It was a shame as my husband hadn’t - he was in agreement re potatoes, but pork good and scotch egg starter great. Another upset was the front of house who had no people skills, quite rude when I said we were early for our table, saying we would get a drink and sit outside. She offered no smile, then rushed us through, seemingly annoyed about something, but I don’t know what. All the other waiting staff were lovely though, two young girls and boy - excellent. I hope this isn’t one of those places that loses its charm, as it has such a lovely vibe, if not quite loud at times - hey ho as long as all are enjoying themselves, that’s good enough for me.

Decent food and good portions. The cracking on the pork was soft and not crispy which was sad. The staff are very friendly but could have been a bit more attentive.

Roast was dreadful, sorry. Don’t know if it was because we had it at 8pm and everything had been sat around all day, it certainly tasted like it! But if you’re paying the same amount as earlier in the day it should be the same quality no? Dry, hard potatoes and overcooked flavourless lamb, they forgot about our drinks and one starter as well, waiter was apologetic about it and took them off our bill, also had extra dessert added to the bill, which he also took off. Wine and desserts were great however, as well as the ambience. Overall just won’t be going back though, had heard great things but the roast was very much below par.
