The Punchbowl is a 17th century gastro pub, located in the heart of rural Essex and the Crouch Valley and the South Essex Salt marshes.

We offer nose-to-tail style menu, with unpretentious dishes that focus on flavour. Everything is made in house - from bread to mayonnaise, and we use local, seasonal and organic ingredients. Our menu changes daily, as the season's best comes in, and always features day boat fish, meat, offal, rare breed steaks and excellent vegetarian cookery.

Our beautiful garden bar has a lawn and york-stone patio looking out across the farmland of Paglesham and the River Crouch. Throughout the summer we offer BBQ dining from our hand-cranked Asado and Rotisserie Grills.

February isn’t much fun for the seasonal cook. The Hungry Gap approaches and the changeable weather means seafood and fish can often be scarce. So what better time of year to focus on arguably the most important element of real cooking-sauces. Escoffier codified the 5 mother sauces; Hollandaise, Demi-glace, Espagnole, Sauce Tomat & Bechâmel. Join us as we explore and taste the backbone of French cookery, pairing sauces with meats and fish to show how important a good sauce is to a dish. As Rob’s Grandad used to say - “Never mind that, who’s doing the gravy?” Join us for our monthly Wednesday Supper Club, a themed tasting experience that celebrates great food.

Creativity, flexibility and preservation come into play during the Hungry gap; a term given by growers to the period after winter and before Spring really begins when the first of the green vegetables start to flourish. Preservatives, cures and smoking are a cooks best friend. Join us as we explore what can be done to keep our larder stocked, and our taste buds excited in this challenging dearth. Join us for our monthly Wednesday Supper Club, a themed tasting experience that celebrates great food.

Spring has sprung! Wonderful English lamb and suckling pigs start to show at market and asparagus and beans become ripe for the picking. Easter beckons and optimism reigns supreme. Herring are at one of their two annual peaks and Oysters start to lose their milky flesh. Weather permitting, anything may be on offer! Join us for our monthly Wednesday Supper Club, a themed tasting experience that celebrates great food.

A most enjoyable lunch. The service was excellent, the staff were very friendly and accommodating in a busy lunchtime session. The food was of the highest quality. We would have no hesitation in returning for a further meal. The cost of the meal was in excess of what we would normally pay, but for a special occasion, it made it a memorable experience.

Our first visit. Great beer, food and sevice. The pub has been totally refurbished to a high standard. Certainly a lot different to when I was a regular in the 80s. 😃 Can't wait to return and try more dishes.

This was our first time dining at the punch bowl, pagelsham and we were not disappointed. We enjoyed a delicious lunch , which was beautifully cooked, exceptionally flavoursome and well presented. The mackerel was the best I've tasted, and I loved how the beetroots and chicory were cooked. The punch bowl has been tastefully modernised whilst keeping all the original features of the 17th century building . We would definitely recommend and will return . Service and friendliness of Proprietor Sally was excellent. Excellent ..we look forward to returning . Thank you
