Eaten here several times and it never disappoints. Well crafted dishes, cooked perfectly. Anything but average ‘pub grub’ and definitely worth the treat.

Absolutely beautiful pub with a wonderful, cosy ambiance. Beautifully looked after and set out. Lovely fire and comfortable seating. Lovely, friendly staff. Fish and chips was the best we’ve ever had - especially with the cider batter. A lovely special treat.

overall a very good experience, but, far too much salt and black pepper added in the kitchen before the food came out, don't know why they did this. The butternut squash main course was not as described, not charred, just bland, and the butter roast potatoes were wedges that tasted like leftovers tbh. Everything else was very good

The Rose and Crown was recommended by a friend. Glad we made the trip from the Bowles Museum. The pub was warm and cosy with a log fit lit, the staff were friendly and attentive, the pub sells real beer!, the choice on the menu was very good, and the food was excellent.

Lovely Sunday lunch, with good portions of meat and vegetables. The only problem was we were seated in the freezing dining room, so cold I had to put my big outdoor coat on, even though I had 3 layers on including a jumper. It was a cold day, but the door to the dining room was left open as no staff remained in there except for when they served, the cold from the hall just made it so cold. It must have been obvious to the staff that we were cold, my daughter had her coat over her legs, but no mention was made or an offer to reseat us. We were asked to pay in the bar, and when we did we found it full of diners warmed by lovely log burners and fires. What a shame, we drove especially for lunch from Durham and all I will remember is being very, very cold. I suggest you visit on a warmer day or request a table in the bar area.

I had the wild boar sausage hot sandwich, which was served with coleslaw and triple cooked chips. Generous number of sausages, which were cooked to perfection. The bread was fresh and tasty, the same with the coleslaw. The triple cooked chips were very hot on arrival, so I suggest you leave them for a while; the texture and taste were perfect. For dessert I tried the rice pudding with crumble topping, spiced apple and vanilla ice cream. Again, I couldn’t fault the texture and taste. My favourite part was the cinnamon in the apple puree. The young lady who served us was enthusiastic, helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. The building was warm without being hot, comfortable atmosphere and relaxing. No jarring music.

Such a cosy setting with the fire roaring - just what we needed on a frosty January. Our food was delicious as always. We were very tempted by the puddings, but decided to be good (being lunchtime!), so we were delighted that our coffees came with a wee chocolate on the side! A very nice touch! Thank you. Will be back soon.
