I recently visited The Stag for a valentines meal with my partner and had a mixed experience. While the ambiance was pleasant, I found the food to be overpriced for the quality served. I opted for the chicken on the valentines menu and found the sauce to be overpowering meaning the only thing I could taste was peppercorns. My partner had the duck which stated on the menu that it was served perfectly pink but this was not the case, it was over cooked. The veg for both of our dishes was undercooked and it seemed like the plates had sat under heat for a long time before coming out to us. The dishes didn’t quite match the premium prices with my main being £26.95. It was more like standard pub food. Additionally, some of the staff could benefit from further service training. While some were friendly, there were moments where attention to detail seemed lacking. Our wine was slammed down onto the table and the server didn’t even check if they were the right way around. I had a rosé which was warm and my partners white wine was also warm. We asked for water when we ordered our drinks at the start of our meal and this did not appear until we had nearly finished eating. We had not even looked at a drinks menu before we were asked what we had wanted and it all felt a bit rushed. We did not stay for desserts as we felt underwhelmed with the experience. With a bit more refinement in both the culinary offerings and service, The Stag has the potential to provide a truly exceptional experience, however if it continues as it is currently they need to consider the cost of their menu to reflect the quality offered. It may have been the case that it was a busy evening but I think they would benefit from cutting down on the menu choices if this was the case. Unfortunately we would not return.

3rd time but 1st time on an evening. As a couple, the positions of their tables for 2 are placed in positions where you feel like an add on. We were moved from under the very busy, traffic wise door frame into the back table area, onto the next table in. Better but still a busy foot fall area. Not contingent with a good atmosphere and being part of the main restaurant. It was a hall way basically, where the waitresses stood keeping an eye on things. Food as usual was absolutely fab, the service 1st class, just a shame about those 2 tables in the hall way.

Our lunchtime meal was delicious. Generous portions on a varied menu. Gluten Free options available. Very attentive young staff member. Nothing was too much trouble. The bar restaurant was warm with a wood burner and comfortable seating. We thoroughly enjoyed out visit and would recommend it. It’s open 7 days a week , all day food available.

A table of 5 came in after us and were served a long time before us. When our food did arrive it had obviously been kept warm for some time as it was dried up and cool
