I cannot fault the food and if it weren't for the service and the ambience I would definitely go back. However it's not that simple. When the French waiter delivered our starters he thought it was acceptable to criticise (rather loudly & in front of other guests) our choice of wine (we ordered a red, I was having fish & hubby venison). Quite some time after ordering their food other diners were told that their choice was no longer available and were asked to choose something else despite being served their choice of wine which complimented the dish. I understand this happens from time to time in a restaurant but surely not at the beginning of the evening and particularly when the restaurant was only partly occupied. Then we ordered our dessert along with the recommended dessert wine to complinent it. The wine was served and then 5 minutes later I was told that the dessert was no longer available. I was the first person in the restaurant to order dessert so where had it gone? The waiter was about to remove my glass of dessert wine but "NO" I said. The restaurant was dark and chilly with no atmosphere. However the food was very tasty and I have to say that the fish soup is one of the most delicious I have tasted. Such a shame about the rude French waiter.

We arrived at the end of Sunday lunch service but they accommodated us in tweaking what was left into a lovely meal with efficiency and a pleasant manner, would go back. Appeared very family friendly and has one night where they do an all you can eat mussels night. Many thanks

As always - a lovely meal with Mark and his team. Great food, great service and very nice wines. Can't recommend The Star enough.

We went to the Star for the first time last week ... for my husband's birthday. I'm gluten intolerant and Mark spent as much time as I needed going through the menu and telling me what was good for me and which dishes they could modify to suit me. Service throughout the evening was attentive but not intrusive. We both had frogs legs to start (divine ... soft, tender and succulent ... for those that have never tried them, they are just like baby chicken legs in flavour and texture). I had moules and my husband chose a rare steak for our mains. The steak arrived rare (unlike many places where rare seems to equal medium to well cooked). He was so taken by their potato croquettes (a bit like latkes) that they made him some more! We sat outside, as it was a pleasant evening, though too chilly for the other diners who all chose to retreat indoors. We'll definitely go back again.

This was my first visit here. The service was absolutely terrible; we were waited on by a lovely young man who was on "work experience" and who was given no help or guidance by the staff whatsoever. Subsequently, he made lots of mistakes which you do not expect on a Saturday night out. You do not expect to be served by untrained staff at an establishment like this. As to the food, the scallops were so over-cooked that I was not even sure that they were scallops and the plate of snails was minuscule. We ordered our desserts but after 30 minutes of waiting, gave up and asked for the bill. When we complained the Manager apologized and we were refunded the price of our drinks but a birthday treat out was ruined. Will not be returning.

In fairness, our first visit to the Star was early for dinner but this was necessary due to the fact we were attending a Thaxted music festival event later in the evening - so for a (short!) we were the only diners in the restaurant, never a good situation - however this fact was quickly forgotten due to the genuine warmth of the welcome received from the staff and the cozy but attractive lay out of the dining area. The menu although short, included an interesting mix of classic French dishes - which did not disappoint on arrival, with both the presentation and quality of the food served being of a high standard. As no agreement could be reached regarding wine within our party it was helpful to be offered a good range of both red and white wines by the glass. Regarding price, I would say that the cost of the food was a little high for the area, but notwithstanding this fact, the level of service and quality of cooking means that we will definitely be going back to enjoy a rather more relaxed dining experience and perhaps even a cognac or two with the coffee we didn't have time for on this visit!
