The Highlander Hotel and Supper Club are back! Join us to experience our modern take on the Highlander's 1967 Supper Club. Features two dining rooms with two completely different experiences: One, an adult-oriented classic supper club with a more upscale feel and swanky lobby bar; Two, a lively family-oriented casual dining room centered around the historic sunken bar and an arcade with retro and modern games. Choose your experience at booking!

The Highlander Supper Club was built in 1967. The hotel, ballroom, and pool followed in 1974. For the next 30 years, both experienced extraordinary success playing host to celebrities like Micky Mantle, Joan Baez, and Arnold Palmer, arguably becoming one of the most popular entertainment, event, dining, and hotel destinations in Iowa history! The Highlander Hotel has been reimagined, reinvented and renovated as a chic boutique urban resort, the only independent hotel in Iowa City.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
The Supper Club at the Highlander Hotel offers a mixed dining experience with standout service and some "really good" dishes like the ribeye and prime rib. Guests appreciate the swanky lobby bar and arcade games. However, issues with ambiance, buffet layout, and menu availability suggest room for improvement.

We came here on a Friday night and it was so quiet with only 2 other tables. I don’t understand how this place isn’t busier as the food was excellent. The 3 of us had the Prime Rib with loaded baked potato and sautéed vegetables and it was all excellent. Our son got the Onion rings to start and they were also very good. Our server, Doug, was very attentive and did very well by us. I would definitely eat here again and my only thinking as to why this pace wasn’t packed is because it’s a little out of the way but it’s recently renovated and very nice. The pub down the hall has all sorts of arcade games which was fun after we finished dinner.

The food was good. Service was excellent. It was disappointing that basic dish items as the dinner salad and baked potatoes were not available. They were out of mushrooms for the appetizers. Having made a reservation for 10 people for an anniversary dinner, you would think they would be prepared for us.

We thought the Iowa River Power was still serving at the Highlander and boy were we wrong. They have left and the hotel just offered a breakfast “buffet.”. It’s nothing more than what you receive at a normal hotel’s FREE continental breakfast-eggs, sausage/bacon, waffles, small pastries, but they charge $28 a person!! It was so not worth the money!!! The only redeeming factor was our waiter, Jake. He was sweet, caring and attentive. However, we will never return, too expensive and too little!

Meal was a very good value and price point was exceptional for the meal. While not Chicago-steakhouse level, ribeye and prime rib was prepared medium-rare as requested. Mixed vegetables were very good. Salad portion was small, but adequate and tasty. Baked potato was good,, not great. Hard dinner rolls were served with tub of butter on top - warm rolls wrapped in cloth would have been more appropriate. We were told on arrival they were short-staffed. Service was personable, with one lapse - hostess was going to seat us at very first table inside door despite a dozen open tables behind. Ambiance is lacking. No supper club vibe and no mood. From picture of tulips hung sideway on a wall to fit a space to folding chairs at most tables (although nice, wooden folding chairs) and a few out-f of-place high-backed chairs scattered throughout, the dining area offered little sense of atmosphere. Dining room door opened to hallway with families parading by to arcade (a reason not to site just inside door). In summary, a decent meal. Particularly for the price. Service was overall good and friendly. Atmosphere was lacking and could improve to create a more desirable environment.

Terrible brunch buffet. Meat was cold. Food basic. Frozen pie boxes next to the dessert table. Room was dark.

The stuffed mushrooms were good. The calamari was a standard frozen version with think coating, not great. The service at first was horrible. It took 1/2 hour to get a poorly made drink (there were 5 other people in the place). We got a new server and she did a wonderful job remaking the drink and serving us. That was the highlight. I had prime rib, it came dried out from being under heat lamps or stored in an oven with knife sent to use with it was tucked under the prime rib and so hot I couldn't touch it. The place smelled musty, the decor looked like left over wedding decorations. They had taken the old chairs and covered them with material held in place with a large bow - not elegant at all. I won't go back. It was a horrible disappointment as I loved this supper club when I was a high school student. They won't survive long if things don't get better. In addition to our party of 3, there were 8 people who were served there between 5:30 and 9:30 on a Friday night.

Loved my time at The Supper Club, food came out hot and delicious. Our server was helpful and accommodating. We enjoyed the prime rib and ribeye that were both perfect. Before we left we played a few games and had a few local craft beers. Great night all around!
