The Woodmans Arms is a beautiful ‘country feel’ pub and dining room situated within the village of Whickham, at the top of the hill, hidden amongst rows of spectacular trees. We are more than just a venue, we are a destination worth travelling to serving classic comforting food made with love, served in cosy surroundings overlooking the most amazing views of the North East.

We are the proud winner of the Newcastle Chronicle’s Eddy Eats’ pub of the year for character, quality, service and value. UK top 3 in the Seafish National Fish and Chip awards 2019 and Diners’ choice award for best ambience. Best British Pub Pie winner for 2020.

We support our local farmers, and work closely with a number of local suppliers to ensure the very best fresh produce. All our food is cooked freshly to order so whether it be a bar snack, light bite, leisurely lunch, evening meal or Sunday Roast it is safe to say that you will in safe hands.

    Having recently visited another local competitor, I have to say that the Woodmans did not emerge as the front runner. We had an olive Starter which was mediocre. Whilst there was plenty of small olives in the portion, they had no taste and literally been poured out of a jar; still in the brine. There was nothing accompanying teas and coffees, not even a little biscoff. This is where they could up their game because at another very similar establishment near Stanley, they offer lovely little portions of cake treats with each coffee or tea - all for less than £3. The room temperature wasnt immediately cosy upon arrival at 7pm and we didn't feel able to take coats off straight away. (Although, it was zero degrees outside to be fair).

    Just love this place, even though its a good 30 minutes drive for us to go. The place is a must visit. Sunday lunch is outstanding

    The food was only just ok. We went later in the day for Sunday lunch (4.30pm) Roast potatoes too hard, roasted parsnip and carrot also hard around the edges and had obviously all been cooked much earlier in the day and kept warm. The veg was poor, small amount of overcooked broccoli and cabbage, meat passable. Overall disappointing food. It’s a shame as we were there three weeks ago and it was really good (so we went back)- not consistent. Sadly we won’t return for Sunday lunch. Service was decent with very nice staff and it’s a lovely place.

    Lovely tasty Sunday lunch .Beef brisket was so well cooked. Really enjoy this meal today . Staff were excellent quick service and all were very friendly.

    What a lovely setting for Sunday lunch! The service from the staff was second to none. The lunch came out quickly and I was blown away by the portion sizes. It’s excellent value for money and we have found a new favourite place!
