Far from the madding crowd, yet in the center of Buda - in the heart of the elegant Rózsadomb district - stands the prestigious Vadrózsa Restaurant with all its glory as one of the citadels of indigenous Hungarian gastronomy re-opened in the spring of 2016.

Our cuisine represents traditional Hungarian and international gastronomy at its finest bearing in mind the importance of modern kitchen technology as well.

An interesting fact about the villa that the owner was a Hollywood character actor , S.Z. "Cuddles" Sakall who portrayed the head waiter in the well-known movie, Casablanca (1942).

The dinner here was an absolutely fantastic experience and one of the true highlights of our trip to Budapest. We were greeted by Gabor, who has a lovely style, and he took great care of us throughout the entire dinner. The barbecue menu was fantastic, our boys went back for seconds, and also enjoyed the desert. We enjoyed the sour cherry soup and the cucumber soup, excellent choices after a hot day in Budapest. The restaurant is beautifully located in a residential area, has a wonderful outside eating area in the garden, and the piano player made sure that the ambience was perfect. For film fanatics, the house was previously owned by a famous Hungarian actor who played the waiter in Casablanca, and the interior still is testimony to the house’s rich history. A glass of Tokay rounded up a lovely dinner. Thank you!

It was a special Mother's Day menu. The soup and the vegetarian main course were very salty

From the first contact onwards this was a lovely experience. Located in a quiet part of the Buda hills, approached through a private garden, which must be glorious in the summer, we found ourselves in a piece of early 20th century elegance. Warmly greeted, although we were an hour early, and relieved of our raincoats, we were shown to a beautiful wood panelled dining room with a baby grand piano; more of that later… The menu covers ‘high end’ takes on classic Hungarian dishes. The ingredients are of the highest quality and the presentation superb, enticing and classically generous rather than the modern fine dining approach of small plates. This is fine dining as our grandparents would have enjoyed it and we loved it. We had starters, goose pate, rillette and smoked breast all of which were delicious. At a calm, unhurried pace we proceeded to goose and veal mains of equally classical elegance. We were recommended some delicious Hungarian wines including Cabernet Franc that would stand scrutiny anywhere on the right bank in Bordeaux. When it came to pudding we were in the mood for cheese to continue enjoying the red wine. Although not on the menu, the simple mention of it, the ever helpful waiter came out to announce that the chef would create something for us. We were delighted to be served a sharing plate comprising Feta, Brie and a third local cheese with sliced quince, apple, walnuts and toasted bread. I mentioned the piano; not long after we began dinner a gentleman arrived and positioned himself at the piano, proceeding to gently trip his way through a selection of classic jazz and show tunes. He was a delight and we had a brief chat in his break when he showed us photos of him playing on cruises in the late 50s/early 60s in the elegant era of cruising. Nothing better embodies the experience of this delightful restaurant. For all the quality, service and ambience the final treat was the bill, such good value.

If you think to go. Forget. We made a reservation expecting to have a special experience with Hungarian food in a different place far from the center and at beautiful Buda. First they let us waiting for almost half an hour to became to bring the menu. After they forgotten one of our starters. The main dishes arrived one our after. The food is good and some waitresses tried to fix things, but it was a disaster. Worst: they didn’t say that kitchen close at 10 pm and when we ask for desert they told that it was closed. We ask to talk with the owner and he didn’t go and when we refuse to pay for the service, they didn’t like, but after 15 minutes, accepted. We concluded that they hate tourists. Avoid it

This was our second time to dine at this wonderful restaurant, the last in 1994 on our first visit to Budapest. The setting is beautiful in the hills of Buda in a quiet neighborhood away from the noise of the city. There are several dining rooms and a lovely outdoor eating area when weather permits. The menu is diverse including many Hungarian specialties. Our food was delicious and the service excellent, all in an elegant dining room with a pianist who added to the ambiance with a program of music that never hindered our conversation. The cab ride from central Pest was less than $10. Do not miss this dining experience.
