Review summary

Willie Mae's NOLA offers a delightful dining experience with "unbelievably delicious" food, exceptional hospitality, and a relaxed ambiance. The fried chicken is often praised as the "best in New Orleans," and the gumbo is a highlight. While service is friendly, the new location is still refining operations. Highly recommended for traditional Southern flavors.

Review of Willie Mae’s NOLA Gumbo Willie Mae’s NOLA is a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic Southern comfort food, and their gumbo is nothing short of amazing. The dish is a perfect balance of rich, smoky flavors and hearty ingredients, showcasing the essence of New Orleans cuisine. The roux, the heart of any gumbo, is expertly crafted—dark, velvety, and brimming with flavor. It’s evident that hours of care go into achieving that depth. Packed with tender chicken, succulent shrimp, and spicy sausage, every bite offers a burst of well-seasoned goodness. Served over a bed of fluffy white rice, the gumbo is warm, filling, and incredibly satisfying. The portion size is generous, ensuring you leave with a happy belly. Pair it with their cornbread or a side of sweet tea for the full Southern experience. Willie Mae’s gumbo isn’t just a meal—it’s a soulful celebration of tradition and flavor. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this dish is a testament to why New Orleans remains the culinary heart of the South. Highly recommended!

Willie Mae's NOLA is an absolute must-visit for anyone craving authentic Southern comfort food. From the moment you step through the door, you're greeted with warm, Southern hospitality that sets the tone for the entire dining experience. The highlight of the meal is undoubtedly the fried chicken, which is justifiably famous. It's perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside, and seasoned to perfection. The sides are equally impressive – buttery cornbread, and flavorful red bean hummus- yep- red bean hummus all complement the main dish beautifully. The atmosphere is casual, yet vibrant, capturing the essence of New Orleans with its lively energy and colorful decor. Whether you're a local or a visitor, Willie Mae's NOLA feels like a true gem of the neighborhood, serving up hearty portions and food that tastes like it’s been lovingly prepared by family. The staff is friendly and attentive, ensuring that you feel right at home throughout your meal. With its unbeatable combination of incredible food, authentic NOLA flavors, and a welcoming atmosphere, Willie Mae’s NOLA is a dining experience you won’t soon forget.

Food was spectacular! Service started really good and then fell off at the end. Servers were walking around on cell phones and never came back to give us the check after table was cleared. Ambience was good and fun however I would suggest turning the music down a little. It was hard to have conversation while sitting at the table.

I came here with my husband and family who was visiting us from out of town. I ordered the fried chicken and the butterbeans/rice. The fried chicken was very greasy. It seemed like they fried it and immediately plated it after taking it out the grease. There was a grease puddle on the plate. The butter beans and rice were great. The cornbread was surprisingly COLD. It did not have a hint of warmth. Maybe that is how they serve it because everyone in my party of four had cold cornbread. The other people in my party shared similar sentiments about the chicken. This meal was disappointing to say the least.

Definitely enjoyed Willie Mae’s NOLA food and new location on Barrone in the CBD. SHALENA was a great wait person. So very different from Willie Mae’s Scotch House on St Anne in Treme…and the line we used to wait in to get inside. Now they take reservations. WOWZA!

While taking our first trip to NOLA, we were fortunate enough to dine at Willie Mae’s. Luckily, they reopened just a few weeks ago on Barronne. The hospitality was excellent, food was unbelievably delicious, and ambiance was very relaxing. All staff were very welcoming, with speedy service and friendly smiles. My wife and I ordered the 1/2 chicken, gumbo, chicken and eggs, and a house salad. The gumbo was full of flavor. The chicken was the best we have ever had. Light, crispy, juicy with a unique airy batter. They put a unique spin on their deviled eggs which we both enjoyed. I would highly recommend this legendary restaurant to anybody. We also met a couple from MS who had frequented the Scotch House in prior trips. I asked how this new place held up and they replied “the setting is very different but the chicken is still just as good as the Scotch House”. Enjoy!
