The original Reata Restaurant located in the scenic Davis Mountains of west Texas offers the same fine dining and Legendary Texas Cuisine you can find at the Fort Worth location. Alpine, home to Sul Ross State University is near Texas tourist destination Big Bend National Park and the towns of Marathon, Fort Davis and Lajitas. Alpine is also a short drive from Marfa, Texas renowned both for the mysterious Marfa Lights and Donald Judd's Chinati Foundation. Reata, named after the legendary ranch in the James Dean classic movie, "Giant", which was filmed in nearby Marfa, boasts the same high quality Southwestern dining you can find in Fort Worth. This is not food for the faint of heart, from Chicken Fried Steak to Calf Fries or the Pepper Crusted Tenderloin and Cowboy Rib Eye Steak, this is a dining experience not to miss.

Absolutely great food and service. It will be a regular stop every time we are in Alpine. My wife and I split the chicken fried chicken and it was perfect!!! Our waitress was very friendly and the owner even stopped by to say hi.

Service was great; food and drink was horrendous. It started off badly with my margarita on the rocks that was so sour it was like sucking on a lime - totally undrinkable. My husband was the winner in the Drinks round with an Old Fashioned that tasted like it should. However, he wasn't so lucky in the Food round: He ordered a Chicken Fried Steak, which looked delicious piled high on the plate with mashed potatoes; however, he got a nasty surprise when he bit into it - it was Chicken Fried CHICKEN (so, if you want the chicken, you might be OK). I ordered - and got - Carne Asada with Cheese Enchiladas, but be careful what you wish for. The meat was hard and tough and the enchiladas were burnt on the ends and the cheese wasn't really melted. Not the "signature" I was looking for. To be fair, the biscuits & butter served with the drinks was delicious, as was the rice & beans and even the brussels sprouts. Living in the area, we've eaten here multiple times when the food was good; however, we wouldn't take visiting friends & relatives here again and cannot recommend this place to anyone.

The best tortilla soup — notes of lime and cilantro, LOADED with chicken and tortillas and some cheese. Asada carnita was tender and delicious. Pepper tenderloin cooked to perfection. Going back!!

I get reservations at the Reata every Saturday for dinner. For the 4th time in the past 8 visits , the manager messed up my reservations. I reserved a High Top table and he put me at the bar so he could use the 3 High Top tables for a group of 6. Each High Top seats 4, which would be 12 people at 3 High Tops. But he utilized all 3 for a group of 6 guys. Not a good use of space. When I expressed that I was not happy, never saw him in the restaurant the rest of the time I was there. Guess my $6,000+ I spend each year does not matter to him. In the future I will be enjoying my Saturday dinners at other restaurants. Won’t be going back to the Reata until the Manager figures out how to manage his reservations.

Too bad that what could have been a great evening out with family turned into a bit of a horror show. Returning here after 15 years, I was excited to share the experience. Although the food was up to the standards I remember, the service was horrendous. Seated at 5:45 on a Thursday, it wasn't busy, nevertheless our cocktails took forever to be served. A few sips in, 3 of the 4 entrees were served, sans the salad we ordered as a starter. The soup, also a starter, was served with the entrees and was cold. The 4th entree finally arrived as the first 3 were almost finished. By now, the waiter recognized how badly things were going and comped the 4th entree. Bottom line: there was a complete breakdown in communication among all players: bartender, waiter, kitchen crew. I'm very sad to write this and hope that our experience was an aberration.

Manager messed up my reservations. Sat me at the bar when I reserved a high top. This has happened on two other occasions. Very poor management.

Manager gave my reserved table to someone else. What’s the point of a reservation if the manager doesn’t know how to manage them. Very disappointed.

My husband and I enjoyed our meal at the Reata restaurant and the waiter was very friendly. I had citrus chicken and my husband had Carne Asada with enchiladas. We both liked our meal very much. The manager showed us around the restaurant and took time to explain murals as well as history of the area. We would definitely recommend this restaurant.

We usually go to dinner once a week for date night, and this week we decided to go to Reata. The food was good but my tortilla soup was only warm and not hot. The waiter seemed to cater to the table next to us a lot more than our table. Other than that the ambiance was fine.
