Proper 21, brought to DC from the New York City restaurateurs Rob Zahn and Will Strozier that own Manhattan Proper and Proper West, opened in early October 2016. Located at 1319 F Street NW, Proper 21 is a high end sports bar serving All American classics with a gourmet twist. Proper 21 is the third location of NIEUW Group Inc.

Like its predecessors, located in New York City, Proper 21 serves contemporary American cuisine. The space maintains the modern aesthetic and New York style of the Manhattan locations, which have best been described as Tom Ford meets Thomas Edison. The restaurant provides the best audio & visual for sports, corporate functions, nightlife and other events.

                                                                  The food and service were fabulous. Unfortunately, they were out of many of the menu items which was disappointing. They were much busier than usual for a Sunday due to a large meeting that was occurring in DC. It is a great atmosphere, but a little on the loud side making conversation a bit challenging.

                                                                  As a National Theater subscriber, I’m always looking for places to go for a bite beforehand. I like the vibe and the food was good. The service was another story. The dining room was not packed, and there were several empty tables nearby. We had to get our server’s attention to order, to get water and to get our check. I will try again, but the first experience was a little disappointing.

                                                                  Greetings at the hostess stand was non-existent. Lady didn’t make eye contact, and because of the loud restaurant, could not hear me when I stated my name on the reservation. Very unprofessional. But, we were lucky to have a good server who provided excellent information regarding gluten free items on the menu. Drinks (old fashions) were so-so as they were not properly prepared. Ordered the fish and chips and a burger. Both were delicious and were the reason we would return. The noise level is similar to a semi truck or jet engine. Literally have to yell to be heard. Don’t plan on a conversation.

                                                                  Food was good. I had the salmon burger. My only complaint is one that I'd have with a number of restaurants--it's hard to eat the burger because the liquid from the topping, in this case cole slaw, soaks into the bottom part of the roll, making it less than structurally capable of holding the burger together. But really, we enjoyed the food, and our server, Stephanie H., was very personable, knowledgeable, and efficient.
