  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighbourhood gem
The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

Seemed run down and not clean. Food was just ok but the special sea bass was good. Desserts were not good - soggy tart and melted lava cake.

The food was excellent, as always, and the fixed price menu is such good value. A very pleasant meal.

Food ideas are good, just not fully executed. Soups and sauces are first indications of culinary artistry and these were average. French onion soup stock is example of average (more browning of onions and more flavorful bullion or reduction would be nice), but gruyere cheese good quality and flavor excellent. Salad dressing on mixed greens almost nonexistent or lacking in flavor. Seafood casserole without flavor, Cajun or creole seasonings would be helpful. Rack of lamb ordered rare, served between medium rare and medium, reduction sauce not as flavorful as ideal, much like french onion soup stock. Shrimp in cocktail appetizer not juicy and sauce was glorified catchup. Chef might taste St Elmos Steakhouse version for comparison. The atmosphere is wonderful. If you're going for atmosphere and theater going logistics, and not for food, this is your place. Great attentive wait staff.

Once again, our day trip to NYC was fabulous. Started with lunch Chez Josephine. What a gem! Friendly service by a young gentleman who clearly loves what he does. Two of us had the skirt steak, one had the sole. Delicious!!! And the wait staff warmly accommodated our need to be at the theater for a 2pm show. The potato soup was silky smooth and so flavorful. My steak was cooked perfectly— rare! Pommes frites were crispy and just enough salt. Dessert was the raspberry mango comfit on a coconut cookie. This place is a true gem. While there are so many choices for lunch, we keep coming back to Chez Josephine. Beautiful atmosphere and excellent dining experience.

We were told on several occasions we would get a round table but we got a rectangular one and the manager was very unfriendly and uncaring when I brought this to his attention. Also, the quality of the beef and duck dishes was not up to what I expected and all in all, a three star is very generous as a rating

The food, ambiance, service, and pianist consistently make dining here excellent. I highly recommend this wonderful restaurant to all my friends. You will never be disappointed. It is a true gem amongst the many restaurants in Manhattan.
