Café Napoli is a family owned restaurant, established in 1989 by Tony and Kathy Pietoso. Quickly becoming a success, they moved the small basement restaurant to a larger location at the corner of Forsyth and Bemiston in the heart of Clayton. In 2003, sons Ande and Kye expanded their family restaurant by adding Bar Napoli, a swank cocktail lounge. A few years later, Napoli Reserve was added onto Bar Napoli allowing for private event space and an additional bar and lounge for the weekends. After years of a flourishing business, Kathy and Tony decided to take their ventures West to Town and Country where they opened their second location, Napoli2, managed by Ande. Kye has taken the reigns from his father and is now the front man for the 8,000 square foot establishment in Clayton. Café Napoli and Bar Napoli have recently undergone a face lift inside and out. Inside the kitchen, Executive Chef from Napoli2 Jon Berger was recently added to the team, bringing fresh ideas and innovation to the regional Italian specialties.

      This restaurant was walking distance to my hotel, and I liked it well enough to eat there a second time during my stay in STL. Our server Kevin was terrific. He was congenial and efficient. He knew his menu well. He refilled beverages regularly and checked on us periodically. The manager stopped by to see if we were enjoying ourselves. Since we dined late, they weren’t interested in turning the table over and allowed my friend and I to linger over coffee. The ceilings are low, so the noise level is high, despite clear efforts to muffle noise from the design— plush upholstery and heavy wall hangings and art. One might even call it romantic. Of the food, I call your attention to the “stack” appetizer. It was fantastic. Sweet cherry tomatoes, roasted red peppers, whipped goat cheese and thin slivers of lightly breaded and fried eggplant. I ordered it both nights I was there. Writing a few days after my visit, I must admit that I don’t even remember what I ordered for my main course. The stack salad is nonetheless worth the trip.

      Food was fine. Service was superb. Brian, our waitron was professional and engaging. The manager stopped by to make sure we enjoyed our meal, which we did. The star of our table was the starter course I had— a stacked caprese plate that had been tarted up with thinly sliced and fried filets of eggplant and carmelized roasted peppers. I highly recommend that dish.
