The River Cottage Canteen in Bristol showcases the very best of what the South West has to offer and what is in season, with the menu changing regularly. Our Canteen can be found in the heart of Clifton on Whiteladies Road, and boasts a wide selection of the best local and seasonal produce including fruit and vegetables, meat and bread, and wines and beers. Virtually all of the produce has been sourced locally by Hugh and his team from some of the finest South West producers, keeping where ever possible within 50 miles of Bristol. The menu entirely reflects our famous seasonal and local ethos.

Great food but we were upstairs and the hot air and smells from the kitchen were sometimes overpoweringNot sure what can be done about that but will ensure I sit downstairs in future.

Very disappointed .. Mains came before starters even tho we mentioned this to the waitress . The meal was for are anniversary so very disappointed

I was disappointed with my first visit to river cottage. I went on a Saturday night so I appreciate it is busy however we received really poor service, even though our waitress was very sweet. We waited half an hour for our drinks order to be taken and then nearly an hour for our mains to come out after we shared a cold mezze starter. Two tables next to us who came in after us received their food before us though. When I asked how long it would be we were told it was because they had two big tables to attend but didn't apologise and didn't check up on us at any point. I won't go there again now.

Lovely meal! Great choices, plenty of veggie and even vegan options. I emailed beforehand to check on the vegan choices for one of our group and they replied quickly with all the info I needed. The prices were reasonable - we had 3 plates of 'nibbles' (nuts, olives, etc), 4 mains including a steak, 8 sides, drinks and 1 dessert for around £110. The veggie main courses would be fine without side dishes unless you are super-hungry, but you'd probably want at least one side with a meat/fish main course. The sides were really my favourite thing - so much more interesting that anywhere else I've eaten where veggies just tend to be steamed or roasted. These were cooked with imagination using herbs, spices and dressings - you could have a lovely meal of just the sides. We ordered 8 sides with 4 mains and I'd say this was too many! I think around 4-6 sides between 4 people would be plenty. Service was very friendly and efficient without being hurried. The building is very attractive. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and hope to eat here again when I'm next in Bristol.

We visit the River Cottage several times a year and returned here for dinner this week and came away delighted, yet again, with the experience. The food is always interesting and of good quality, well presented and served efficiently and politely. The early bird offer is also particularly good value. This restaurant can be thoroughly recommended.

Oh dear. On the plus side, the onion tartlet was very nice indeed, and the service was mostly delightful. Unfortunately, my Severn Project leaves were depressingly limp. Three out of my brother's four vegetable dishes were cold (apparently deliberately so, but this wasn't stated on the menu) and the overall impression was that they were cooked by someone who isn't very interested in vegetables. The chard, for instance, was mostly very chewy stalk with just a couple of small leaves on top. Very disappointing. I've kept trying, because I love River Cottage recipes and admire Hugh F-W and his retinue, but of three visits this is the second that has disappointed so I probably won't bother again. Shame.
