Opened in June 1922, The Tam O'Shanter boasts a rich, storied history and warm, inviting atmosphere. We’re proud to be in our 10th decade of continuous service. We originally considered it a quiet pastoral road stop, since Los Feliz Boulevard was just an unpaved country lane traversed by rabbits and rabbit hunters, in that order.
Everything changed when Walt Disney and his animators, set designers, and crews began trekking out between takes for a bite and a refreshment. So often, in fact, that the Tam was once dubbed “The Studio Commissary.”
Join us and see why the Tam is said to have been Walt’s favorite restaurant!

As a family-run establishment, we’re committed to keeping our community safe. We always practice strong hygiene protocols and rigorously adhere to all CDC food safety standards.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Tam O'Shanter is a historic LA staple known for its "excellent prime rib" and "great ambiance." Diners enjoy the "whimsical" decor and a "rich history" tied to Walt Disney. While some mention service inconsistencies, the "attentive" staff often enhance the experience. Overall, a charming destination for memorable occasions.

We waited 45 min, before being waited on. Took an hour to get our drinks. Food was very over priced and just ok taste wise. The brisket tops were good. If I’m going to do prime rib in the future I’m going to Lawreys next time. The food wasn’t even hot. The system crashed that night and we realized that’s why the service was so slow but overall it just added to the disappointment.

Terrible experience from start to finish on Thanksgiving Day. Arrived 15 min early for reservation (made on October 4) and seated 20 min late, even though many others who arrived after us were seated prior. Woman at front desk is EXTREMELY rude and very poor choice to put her in that position as she isn’t a nice person and horrible at her job. When seated we were placed outside without access to any heat source!!!! In a weird table that jutted away from everything and was right next to the main entrance. I told the man who seated us we were cold and would like to move and he said they are overbooked and there’s nothing they can do and walked away. He was very curt and uncaring, as was our mostly MIA server. Our ENTIRE meal a central table on the patio area stayed empty which was close to 3 heat sources! And other tables in the adjoining patio area were never filled. We were told they couldn’t move a heat lamp near us because the location of our table wasn’t even under the main overhang—so why would you seat anyone there??! Of course We were totally cold our entire meal!! Awful experience, awful staff! Food took an hour to come out, while we sat in the cold. Waited a long time for everything, including the check because of a computer system malfunction. Our server just disappeared (again) after telling us she “doesn’t know what they do here” when the computer is down, so I went to tell front desk we needed to leave (and we were so cold) and the front desk woman said , “Find your server, that’s what your server is for.” Oh except she’s gone, per usual. They hunt her down and she said one computer is up and we finally get our check. We travel a lot, eat out a lot, visit California often, and this was easily the worst restaurant experience we’ve ever had. Food was ok but who cares when everything else is this bad. Still can’t believe a restaurant seats patrons outside in the cold with no heat!! Shameful.

Well it's Tam O'Shanter right? So you can expect a great Lawry's cut of meat. Great. Excellent. On this Thanksgiving day though, the place didn't seem as mobbed as I've seen it in the past. -but somehow they always make you feel like you're lucky to be there! It's not the French laundry Guys!, show a little respect and gratitude towards your over-paying guests. Got there on time but table wasn't ready. My wife and I waited at the bar for 10 min till we were noticed. No problem. -small glass of their house egg nog 17$ wow. I don't mind paying $70 for a slice of prime rib, but do you have to gouge me 40 bucks for a little nothing drink for two seniors. Then the Zinfandel (recommended) that I had with my prime rib was un-drinkable, but the fact that we didn't see a server during our dinner; it was tough for me to even complain. So I just left the glass full. Like I said, you can't complain about the quality of the beef. But sometimes it's the little things that make the experience awesome. -Shrimp cocktail? Over boiled, not crunchy mouthwatering seafood. -somebody who obviously didn't know how to peel shrimp, destroyed the appearance of each one. -Salmon? My wife had it last year and said that this year was completely different and not nearly as good. (New Chef?) How can you screw up beautiful Scottish salmon? If I am wrong someone correct me about this!! -Ice cream sunday? It definitely didn't taste like Häagen-Dazs and some quality fudge... Next time straight to Lowery's for an experience to be remembered!!

First time here! Wonderful evening celebrating an early Thanksgiving with family! Great service and delicious food! The martinis were a generous pour and I loved the Caymus Conundrum! Fresh sourdough bread was delicious! Prime rib tasty with plenty to take home! Tam o Shanter is our new celebration restaurant!

Service was slow and sloppy. Our appetizer salad arrived after our main courses. Our cocktails came with the main courses, a long time after we had ordered them. So we couldn’t enjoy them. Frustrating evening.
