The world famous Walnut Room has been a Chicago tradition since 1907. Located on the 7th floor of Macy's on State Street, the Walnut Room was the first restaurant ever opened in a department store. Conveniently located in the heart of the Chicago theater district, the Walnut Room is an excellent choice to take a break from shopping or for a meal and a glass of wine before the show.
Enjoy our Famous Mrs. Herring's Chicken Pot Pie and other well known favorites on the menu.

Perfect holiday dining experience. Food was very reasonably priced for such an upscale venue. Chicken pot pies are highly recommended.

Sadly, I think Macy’s is not as in tune with what Marshallfield wanted to achieve with the walnut room. It is definitely not the experience that it used to be when it was originally owned and operated by Marshall Fields.

Loved the food. Service was great. The only issue we had was the tables. We were a party of 11. 4 tables were put together and they were all different heights, and very unsteady, so anyone in between had a problem with their plates etc. Also they tables all had a padding on them so our beverages would not sit flat and were falling over anytime we moved. Time to replace the tables for sure. Otherwise our meal and service were wonderful! The prices were surprisingly lower than expected. Loved all the cute Christmas beverages and desserts! Reminded me of my childhood at Marshall Fields. Also great kid meals and desserts!

Three of the five of us got our food first and then our drinks came after the food…the other two in our party Had to tell the server that we didn’t get our food after at least 10-15 minutes-which then took another 10 minutes. The burgers were overdone And the chicken salad sandwiches We’re a little shy of the chicken salad portion They comped our two meals, but still wasn’t the experience I always remembered. Also Our table was about 5 feet from the bathrooms.

We arrived promptly at our reservation time, and when I said my grandchildren were with me, the maitre’d was able to put us in the tree room right in front!! Our server was Jessica P and she was wonderful, and talked with my grandchildren with a big smile. The photographer took a great complimentary picture of us under the tree; we loved it. And the food was really good, including the snowman sundaes. My girls so enjoyed the snow fairy who gave us each wishes. We have started a tradition and we’ll be back again!!!

I have such wonderful, wonderful memories of The Walnut Room. It’s gone downhill. The food is not good. Our meal was cold and it took over 50 minutes to get it. Proteins were dry. The staff is overwhelmed. It is such a wonderful Chicago holiday tradition and you need to bring it back to the way it was.

We were seated 10 minutes early for our 1pm reservation. Out server arrived at our table immediately and greeted us. We put in drink orders then when she came with those we ordered our appetizer and meal. We thought it might take a bit of time as the place was full but it was all out quickly. Ordered thr pot pie and braised beef and both good. This is where service got slow but I think they seated 3 or 4 new tables in her area at once so she was busy. Ordered thr mint cheesecake and that was amazing. Bill was $80 plus tax so not really bad for 2 people to have a nice meal with drinks and dessert. The tree and Christmas decorations were beautiful and we lucked out and were seated near the tree. Will make it a tradition each year to go back. Lucked out on the reservation because we missed it when it opened. So glad we got one!
