While Slanted Door is opening this new location in Napa, it all began with an idea to open a Vietnamese crêpe stand or a noodle shop in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Charles Phan searched for a location but was told that there were already too many Vietnamese restaurants in the area. He moved the search to his own neighborhood: the Mission. He quickly found an available space on Valencia Street.

The Slanted Door was born in 1995 with the goal of elevating Vietnamese food to the next level—modern design, sustainable local ingredients, quality teas, and wine pairings. The Slanted Door was quickly recognized and became too small to accommodate the reservation requests. The growing restaurant moved to South of Market in 2002. It was there that the team integrated a craft cocktail program, which was one of the first restaurants in San Francisco to offer craft cocktail menus. The Slanted Door moved again to the San Francisco Ferry Building in 2004.

We dined at Slanted Door in Napa, and while the food was undeniably tasty, the overall experience left much to be desired. Our reservation was at 8 PM, yet by 8:30, we hadn’t even had our order taken. We sat sipping sparkling water for what felt like an eternity. When the order was finally taken, we enjoyed the vegetarian imperial rolls as our starter. They were flavorful, though we didn’t love having to wrap them in a lettuce leaf ourselves—eating them as-is felt more enjoyable. The wait for the main course, however, was excessive. By 9:10 PM (yes, over one hour later), we finally received it. The main dishes were flavorful but a bit too spicy for my taste. Unfortunately, the chef does not accommodate any adjustments, which I respect but found somewhat upsetting. A couple of positives: the open kitchen with its glass window-wall is a unique feature that allows diners to watch the culinary process. It added some charm to the ambiance. However, the restaurant was quite chilly, and the narrow aisles between tables were uncomfortable. Even as a petite person, I struggled to navigate without feeling like I was intruding on other diners' space — something you don’t want during a dining experience. For vegetarians, the options were limited, and the menu in the restaurant did not match the more extensive options shown online, which was a letdown. In summary, while the food was good, the long wait, lack of vegetarian options, and cramped, chilly dining space made the experience less enjoyable. Hopefully, these areas improve in the future, as the flavors and kitchen design hold promise.

Great eats, well-sized portions! Restaurant history and meals were explained in detail, drinks were amazing. Their seasonal eggnog was exceptional! The host and servers were friendly, and the energy in the restaurant was warm and inviting. Would absolutely visit again!

The ambience in the fireplace room is better than the main dining room. The lighting and decor is stark and not an inviting “cozy” atmosphere. The food was great but they have to go outside to bring the food to the table and some dishes were cold. Although our server was knowledgeable about the menu, he was not attentive. There is so much potential at Slanted Door however, the footprint of this location is not conducive to a fine dining experience in my opinion. I would try it again. My advice, dress warm or ask to be seated near the fireplace!

Ordered several dishes including the "porkchop" which isn't a porkchop!! It is a large slice of pork riddles with fat! About 40% fat. Ugh! Vegetable side dishes were pretty good, lamb chops were good. Warm spring roll appetizer was excellent! Will not return to Slanted Door🙁

Food was as good as I remember but smaller portions for a higher price. Acoustics in the room were loud and the set up in the main dining area was strange with payment kiosks in the center of the room. Overall amazing

We were huge fans of the Slanted Door San Francisco. We were excited to see that there is now a location in Napa. Ok NOT THE SAME! We do not know what happened, maybe a corporate influence, maybe original owners have too many locations to stay hands on? Not worth the expense. The tip is automatically added into the bill so there is zero motivation for outstanding service. The Shaking Beef has been a favorite for years, not anymore. The beef came in huge chewy chunks! In the past it was sliced thin, carmelized, and full of delicious veggies like bok choy. The dish now is lack luster. The host told us that they had never used fresh crab in their crab and glass noodle dish, it is out of a can!??!?!?!? Gross! We remember the dish being toted in San Francisco as a local favorite BECAUSE it was made with FRESH dungeness crab! not paying that price for canned crab! This will not be a stop the next time we are in Napa!
